Re: Guides taking much longer than Carrie and Julie's times
Hugs! I haven't done Bigger, so I can't offer encouragement there. It sounds like anything involving writing or art is taking longer. I wonder if it is just a matter of time for your son's writing speed to be able to increase? One suggestion I have regarding art is to push it to the end of the day. ...

Re: Question about Beyond
We use the Mead primary journal notebook with the space at the top for a drawing and the dashed primary lines at the bottom. We continue on the same sheet until we are done with that poem or we've run out of room. That way the copywork and the illustration are all on one page.

A Sticky for How to Set Up for Each Guide?
Hi,
I was wondering if it would be possible to have a sticky at the top for threads that talk about how to set up for each guide. I think this would be very helpful!
Thanks!
Kathy

Re: Need guidance in how to handle 2nd and 3rd grade LA
Thanks, Kelley! So did you just do the LA as written in Beyond and then start the Bigger LA when you got to it? I'm thinking of going the same route. I think R&S will work out in the end and the spelling will eventually work its way out as we move into dictation. It would be nice to just be using on...

Need guidance in how to handle 2nd and 3rd grade LA
Hi, we started Beyond this spring (1st grade) and finished up through week 12, day 1 before we finished school for the year. We did the spelling list 1, poetry copywork, and 5th day grammar as written. What I'm trying to figure out is how to handle the LA for 2nd and 3rd grade. Do we continue with t...

Re: Question about LHFHG
We did the timeline on a Crayola floor pad. It ended up being several pages long. It was nice that we could fold it up at the end of the year as opposed to a poster board. I think my dd got a lot out of doing it. The fact that she drew the pictures herself instead of using pre-fabbed ones made the i...

Re: R&S vs. CLE Language Arts
...I'm thinking maybe just letting her read from the book alongside me would help some. Any suggestions on doing the oral work in R&S with a visual learner would be appreciated! (Not to hijack this thread!) :D Kathy... I let our sons read from their books alongside me as I read from my book, and th...

Re: singapore question
We use a number line and 100 chart, too, as well as base 10 blocks with a place value chart. You could try taping a number line on the floor and letting him "walk" or "hop" on it to get a better sense of it. My mom is a retired teacher and gave me one big enough to move around on like that. You migh...

I think you'll find the answer in this thread: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9347&p=68176&hilit=history+stories+for+children#p68176 Basically, this part Unit 31: Day 1: p. 168-169 Day 2: p. 111-112 should read Unit 32: Day 5: p. 168-169 Unit 33: Day 1: p. 111-112 HTH, Kathy

Re: Help with organizing!
For Beyond and LHFHG, I have put the bible, devotional, history spines, science spine, current storytime book and current reader on our school bookshelf and then store the other storytime books and readers in a tub in my closet. It's kind of a fun ritual to go get the next book when we are done with...

Re: R&S vs. CLE Language Arts
Hi, I have been pondering R&S and CLE LA as well. We are using CLE LA 1 this year for 1st grade to shore up my dd's phonics. I have really liked the phonics work this year. The rules coverage is very thorough, and the spiraling helps my dd retain the information. My dd seems to be a visual learner a...

Re: What sticky tabs do you use?
I use a 1" red Post-It flag (it looks like half tape and half red flag) to hold my current place. Then I use 1/2" Post-It flags in other colors to mark the things in the Appendix that I want to find quickly. I've always used the red flag in any book I'm using to mark my current spot, so it makes it ...

Re: So many great stories, so little time
We are trying to read more than one book from each genre in Beyond. So far we have read both Helen Keller (5 days) and Benjamin West (15 days) and both A Lion to Guard Us (9 days) and King of the Wind (11 days, a pretty steady clip). We read Squanto in the evenings and just finished it. I agree, I d...
