Middle school nature study
We've never done much nature study, and it's something I've wanted to get into for a long time. I know how to do it, but making it happen is hard. :) We are also new to HOD, with a 7th grader who will be doing Res to Ref, including Shakespeare. (We have done other curriculum that is more book-based,...

Re: Problems with Medieval History Writing Lessons
Ok, so he writes ok, he just mixes things up with the dress ups? That's a lot easier to fix! If he can catch it when he goes back through, then I'd leave it at that. He will get better at it as the year progresses.

Re: Problems with Medieval History Writing Lessons
It sounds like he may have a disability in expressive language. He seems to take it in readily, but not put it out very well. If he reads back over it, can he find the places that don't work? If you can talk through what he's writing before or as you go, perhaps that will help. You might be able to ...

To extend or not to extend?
I'm a little confused by a couple of things on your placement chart. Maybe it's because my child has a summer birthday, but I'm having trouble figuring out if we should use extensions or not. Here are the details: My youngest will be 12 next school year. She will be in 7th grade, though she is a slo...

Re: STILL MORE from me on Written Narration
Some of your answers are confusing to me. (I haven't done HOD yet, so I can't speak to the OP, but as I'm reading responses, I'm confused.) Several of you have said, "he is only 11." When I look at the placement chart for 11yos, I see that they can do Bigger with extensions, Preparing with extension...

Re: Traveling tips for Beyond, Bigger, and Preparing?
One thing I figured out awhile ago was that if we were just sitting in a car or plane, they might as well be doing schoolwork.

Re: OT: Homeschooling a child who does not want to homeschoo
When we did this with a dd who had been in a school for a short time, we made sure to join a co-op. It was hard, because I still had little kids to drag everywhere, but the ability to make friends in a homeschool setting was very important.

What do you to set things up at the beginning of the year?
Is there a list of things to do in each teacher's guide? I saw a post somewhere on here where someone detailed what she did, things like getting notebooks ready, buying art paper, etc. It seemed like there were quite a few things, and I'm wondering if there is a list somewhere of "do these things be...

I felt Building Thinking Skills was a lot of busywork. My kids LOVE MindBenders, though. I think MindBenders does help build reasoning skills, and it's just fun.

Re: My Son CRIES through EVERY written narration
I can't speak specifically to the HOD, as I'm just getting started there, but I have a young adult daughter now who was very much like this. What finally helped her was when I realized that her writing skills simply were 2 years behind. I had been thinking every year, "this year, we will catch up in...

Re: When does Spelling get better?
Just so you know, there is a type of dyslexia called "stealth dyslexia" which does not affect reading very much. But the primary symptom of this is difficulty with spelling. (Even with regular dyslexia, I have read experts say that if they could give only one test for it, they would use a spelling t...

Yes, I'm not considering skipping them. I just need to know how much to plan for.

Is there a list in the manual of what supplies I will need?
I think I saw in a post here somewhere that there is not. In the sample for Res2Ref, one of the projects needs air-drying clay. I'm thinking that sort of thing would be good to get at the beginning. When I get the manual, will there be that kind of info in it?
