Re: Writing in PHFHG question

Are you sure she is ready for Preparing? Make sure you check the placement charts, especially the parts concerning reading and writing ability. I personally would not do Preparing prior to 4th grade.

Re: DITHOR with a 1st Grader?

No. :)

She will have plenty of time later for DITHOR. I did DITHOR with my 2nd grader along with Beyond. In retrospect, it really was not necessary. I would have been better off working more on the skills written in Beyond--like beginning narration skills or more of the copywork.

Re: Greek for High School

Diane, until Carrie can respond, I just want to put my 2 cents worth in. My dd is in elementary yet and has used Hey Andrew for 3 years. She hasn't quite finished level 3. Anyway, I am looking to use something else and think Elementary Greek may be the way to go next for us. My son studied Greek in ...

Re: Can I get any tips on "Vocabulary" in Bigger?

I'll just be repeating things other moms have said, but my daughter hated vocabulary at first. I had her do only one card at the beginning. Then, her creative mind kicked in and she created a serial using the words in sentences that related to previous card with a story-line that carried over. She l...

Re: Public School teacher as a home schooler?

Love it! Yes, I was a public school teacher for 7 years before God brought me home to teach my kids. It was an adjustment...but here is the thing: I know what my kids know and don't know without tests because of the constant interaction - the relationship! :D Classroom assessment is necessary in sc...

Re: bigger over 2 years?

We did Bigger over 2 years. We did the Units over 2 weeks, with the Days 1-5 on M-W-F-M-W. I used the other days for my own plans. For us, it worked out very well, but then I also felt that after the first half (the end of 3rd grade) my dd could have gone into Preparing. Thinking in retrospect, we c...

Re: Screamer

My loud child grew up to be a sensitive, creative, and highly intelligent young man, now 20, who loves to play music--piano mostly--but any instrument will do! He loves to sing. He is rarely quiet now but at least is no longer screaming! He does ramp up fast to any emotion, though. I admit our 2 yea...

Re: Extensions verses Self-Study History books in Preparing

I can't tell you what is right  ...I'm sorry...but I can tell you what we did. I used both sets of books when we used Preparing for 5th. The Self-Study books include things your child will need to complete one of the history boxes (independent history, I think - it's been several years). The ...

Re: If you've used Preparing, please vote!

I voted other, as my dd is 10years 2 mo and we just finished Bigger and will start Preparing soon. She will be just turned 11 when we finish. We will be using the Extensions.

Re: Thoughts and Questions on PLL and ILL. . . . .

Comparing PLL and ILL (at least the part we've used thus far) to R&S is like comparing apples and oranges. They aren't the same, at all! We alternated R&S 2 and R&S 3 with PLL and are using ILL now. My dd really loved PLL but isn't enjoying ILL as much, as there is a step up in difficulty. She still...

Re: Apologia jr notebook or experiment kit?

We have used other Apologia books, and we love the (regular) notebooking journals. I have, at times, wished I bought the experiment kits. However, in considering how to use the books Carrie schedules, I have decided, for those books, to just follow her instructions exactly. With the other books, not...

Re: Should I switch from Sonlight?

There will be no editing with HOD! I think there is a better balance in HOD. With Sonlight, in addition with editing, I struggled to do all of that reading out loud. HOD has just the right amount, and my daughter is doing a lot of her own reading now. I don't worry that she will read content that is...

Re: Slowing down a 3rd grader

We used Bigger over 3rd and 4th grades by going half speed. I had my dd do a 50 states notebook, read the extensions, and also do an Indiana (our state) state study (something typically done at this age here). We continued to do DITHOR, R&S English, math at regular speed. We also have been adding Ap...

Re: Would my child be able to skip high school?

I would not skip anything. There is more to growing up than just academics. Let him finish his work quickly, pursue his interests, but I would not skip any of the years of HOD. It sounds like, with the academics, he could use that time to work on writing. Writing is an important skill for any career...
