Re: Dictation and Dyslexia

Here is a thread where Carrie and Julie address this issue: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7024&p=52490&hilit=+dictation+dyslexia#p52490 I sort of suspect mild dyslexia with one of my children, and dictation has made a very noticeable difference in her spelling over just a y...

Re: Dictation Clarification

I only dictate 3 to 5 words at a time. I got this idea from Julie in this thread: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12604&hilit=dictation+few+words I wouldn't call an entire sentence a "phrase." I feel like just stopping at punctuation in one sense might actually make it easier...

Re: Preparing Timeline

Here's how Julie did it:

We are just putting my daughter's in a long line on the wall above her desk. I like that she can see it all the time as she works.

Re: placement

Hi Marisa, No I get it that she's 9 right now - but I thought you were considering a program for next school year (2015-16), when in most states she would be considered a 5th grader. According to that website I looked at, Indiana is one of only 3 states that has a August 1 cutoff (I think that's wha...

Re: placement

According to this site: http://www.schoolsnmore.com/articles/article/107-kindergarten-cut-off-dates-by-state she would be considered entering 5th grade in public school in almost all the states, including California. We live in California too, and my daughter turned 10 last August. I considered her ...

Re: Tears over Draw and Write Through History

Yes, thanks for the ideas. I have tried the timer idea in the past, but I only brought it out after the child was already distraught. Perhaps they would accept it better if I try it from the beginning! One is in CtC (but didn't do Preparing), and the other is in Preparing, so they are both on their ...

Tears over Draw and Write Through History

Does anyone else have this problem??? Both my daughters are perfectionists and more often than not, Draw and Write though History causes tears. It also takes them FOREVER to do. They usually like the results when they are done, but the process is exhausting, both for them and for me. This is the onl...

Re: Spiral binding the student notebooks

I used to spiral bind a lot of things. Then I bought a home binding machine. I love it! My daughter's notebook for CTC we bound at home, and it has held up very well. I like it because there are no loose bits of paper to nag her to put away, and it is so much less bulky than a binder. It fits neatly...

Re: LHFHG Combined or Not?

I would suggest you try combining them in LHFHG, if they like to do things together. I think it will be easier for you & it sounds like LHFHG would be a pretty good fit for both your girls. I combined mine when they were in second half of LHFHG, in Beyond, and Bigger. Doing Beyond with the two of th...

Re: Singapore 5 & 6

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I didn't know that Foerster's had a video component. I will have to look into that program too. I actually had the opposite experience with taking calculus in high school. At my high school calculus students also had to take a semester of analysis (pre-calcul...

Re: Singapore 5 & 6

Thank you so much for your advice & your prayers are appreciated! I haven't been able to go to any conventions & haven't seen any of these algebra programs, but since my oldest is not always easy to teach, the video format of Videotext really appeals to me. When I saw it was recommended by both Carr...

Re: Singapore 5 & 6

Wow! Thank you so much for all your responses! Nealewill - it was very helpful to read about your daughter's experiences, especially with Rightstart G. The more I think about it, the more I think you are right that it would not be a good fit for my dd either. She likes her math straightforward & qui...
