Re: Questions about Bible in World History
Thank you for your thoughts Carrie, I am really looking forward to "The Most Important Thing You'll Ever Study." I think it looks wonderful. We also do a reading time in the evening, but I read aloud to youngest while the others read in their rooms. I like your idea of having the whole family read s...

Re: I need some ideas for boys
Does your husband enjoy board games? My husband and son play board games almost every day before dinner. They have had so many favorites - Sequence, Backgammon, No Stress Chess, Catan, and their current favorite, Jaipur. They play by the hour on the weekend! Also, my son took a woodworking class las...

Re: Questions about Bible in World History
Thank you for your encouragement! I have been thinking of moving family Bible Time from the evening (when we currently do it) to the morning so that everyone is less tired. Perhaps that would help. At the moment we only read one chapter a day and only 5 or 6 evenings a week. It would take us over 4 ...

Questions about Bible in World History
Hello all! I have decided that it is a very important goal for me to have my kids read the entire Bible during their high school years for several reasons that I won't go into here (unless people are interested  ). I read the thread below: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&...

Re: Ideas to shorten the week to four day schedule
Just teach 4 days and the following week pick it up with Day 5 and Days 1,2,3 of the next unit. Then just pick it up the next week where you left off. I taught all the younger guides that way with my son who is now in Preparing. He does not move up in guides at the traditional school year time, but ...

Re: Finished Singapore 6A/B. What math next?
Carrie intends Principles of Mathematics to be the bridge between Singapore 6b and Foerster's Algebra: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16637&p=116613&hilit=foerster%27s#p116613 I am quite sure that if your son is good at math he can go straight to the second book of that seri...

Re: Veteran HODer Freaking Out!
I was going to suggest having him read it himself also. My daughter in Rev to Rev loves the "fluff," but she prefers it if I don't read aloud to her because it takes longer! Part of your son's problem may be that he wants to "get on with it" as far as his schoolwork goes, and reading a story aloud s...

Re: bigger and preparing at the same time
Why not just pick up Bigger where you left off and do it with both of them? You can add extensions with written narrations for the older one if he is ready. Then his workload would be very similar to Preparing, and it would save you a LOT of effort in running 2 different teacher intensive guides. It...

Re: bigger and preparing at the same time
Another thought - if your son is a strong reader and is capable of independent work, then you could possibly place him in CTC and just have him take it slow until the writing/workload is do-able for him. This way you can have your daughter do Bigger. You could even start the year like that and if it...

Re: bigger and preparing at the same time
I ran those two guides for half of last year, and in my opinion it really is too much. There is so much read aloud material and so much that is teacher intensive. I found I was simply not able to successfully run the two guides full speed. Thankfully my middle child was halfway through Preparing bef...

Re: HOD and Isolation (er, Independence)
In my experience with both my girls age 10 has been a really hard age to homeschool. My oldest was initially combined with her sister in Bigger when she turned 10. I beefed up Bigger a lot for her because the guide was really too easy for her. I found combining my girls very difficult because, even ...

Re: Anyone try combining just in science?
All right, I am convinced! I will keep going with all 3 doing their science separately. I have already done the Preparing guide, so I do remember that the science in there was very good and enjoyable. Thanks to all those who responded.

Re: Science narrations
Thank you all for your replies. You are reminding me to relax and not stress about exactly what is included in the narration as long as the child is making some connections. I have been guilty of expecting certain things to be covered in the narrations when I shouldn't. I think I do this more when t...

Anyone try combining just in science?
I have a child finishing up Bigger who is very mathematically inclined and also likes science. He is already combined in math with his older sister who is almost halfway through ctc. I am considering whether it would be possible when he starts Preparing to have him do the science in ctc with his sis...

Science narrations
Does anyone else find that their kids struggle with science narrations? Both my girls are great with history/storytime narrations, but seem to remember much less when it comes to science. I liked my daughter in ctc to at least remember the bold words in her Land Animals Apologia book, and she seems ...
