Re: visuals of others Common Place Books?
Great ideas. DHT1999: it's neat that your son only wanted the Scripture in his Common Place book!

Q about Common Place book
My 11yo ds will be doing Preparing. What kind of book have you used for the Common Place book? I've read some are using the bound composition books. I was wondering if it would be more special to the child to use something different for this? a journal style hardbound book? what size? I'm looking fo...

Re: Can I just say that I really love this board?
I love all that, plus.... not having a background in education, I love that there are some teachers on this board! That gives me such comfort knowing I can get some professional advice and direction! This board is truly one-of-a-kind.

Re: bdget vs. thrilled w/ HOD
Here's an idea, to break up the purchases. Maybe this would help. This is what I'm doing. Buy only what you will need for the first quarter of the school year, say the first 9-10 units from the teacher's guides. Around unit 8, buy only what you will need for the 2nd 9 units, and so forth. To know wh...

Re: Q about using index cards in Bigger and Preparing
oh, another thing I wanted to ask. knowing how much info goes on the card could help me decide whether to go with the 3x5 or the 4x6. How much info does the child have to put on the vocabulary cards for Bigger? Do they also draw a picture? How much info does the child have to put on the vocabulary c...

Re: Q about using index cards in Bigger and Preparing
Great ideas, thanks so much!
I've seen the 3 ring binders for index cards at my local Wal Mart in the office supply department.

Q about using index cards in Bigger and Preparing
For those who have used Bigger and Preparing: For the vocabulary cards, is it better to use the 3x5 cards or the 4x6 cards?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Do I need phonics for my 9 year old ds?
I don't know if you "need" to do a phonics program or not, but wanted to give my experience. My son, now 11, learned to read easily. I used several resources with him including Alpha Phonics, games at home, reading signs when out and about. We also used Explode the Code series at a relaxed pace. He ...

Re: "the reading lesson" or "reading made easy" ?
With RME, the making of the index cards with the words on them was definately a pain. But, it was worth it because it helped my daughter. After doing the index cards for several weeks, she didn't need them anymore, so now we skip that part, and she just reads the words from the book. She has struggl...

Re: "the reading lesson" or "reading made easy" ?
I started using Reading Made Easy (RME) with my daughter about a year ago. She is 9yo now, so alot older than your daughter, I know. I've never used The Reading Lesson (TRL), so I can't compare. Before using RME, I was using a phonics program with her called Alpha Phonics. It had worked well several...
