Re: How does testing and giving grades work in lower levels?

I also make them do A quality work (with A quality effort) in their work. For my oldest (starting 7th grade) to motivate her to try harder in math and grammar (because she was making careless mistakes) I've started using the "practice" pages in math as quizzes, the workbook "review" pages and the sm...

Re: More challenging spelling list for BLHFHG

There is a passage that they read and study, then you dictate it by phrase and they write it. You are working on spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and attention to detail all at once. There is no longer a set of spelling words. The first passage is... Sue has a bird. It can call and sing. king ...

Re: Stressing over DITHOR book packs

I always do the easier books for my kids for DITHOR. They hate reading, so this lets them not worry about the reading as much as the thinking. We basically do half each year (we don't do it with the regular guides). I have all the books in a bin with a list of which ones go with which book pack... I...

Re: my kids don't like one small square:seashore

Do they understand that with those books you CAN have a square at each of those places (there are more books used throughout the guides). Basically, you are looking at a small section of land to see what's in it. So you CAN go to the seashore, woods, coral reef, tundra, etc, and mark off a section a...

Re: Res to Ref -- which English for dd who didn't do CTC

So is she going in 5th grade now? Or is she 6th grade now?

If she's going into 5th grade now I think I'd do English 4 full speed. I'd do 4 in 5th grade, 5 in 6th grade, and 6 spread over 7th and 8th. No matter what grade she is in I think that's the way I'd do it.

Mine just cover it up if it's where they can see it. Generally using whatever is closest.... paper, book, toy, pillow, whatever :)

She's READING!

Quick backstory... I've never taught my kids to read. My oldest just didn't get phonics and started reading when I took a break from it because she and I both were in tears every day we worked on it. My second started reading over Christmas break after slightly less of a struggle with phonics. My th...

Re: RTR and Shakespeare or not??

Right now I have the history pages all together and then after them the Shakespeare pages all together. It hit me that if I were to put the Shakespeare pages mixed in with the history pages my dd might not forget/skip over/whatever the Shakespeare box as much. Basically its' out of sight out of mind...

Re: More challenging spelling list for BLHFHG

Yes I was trying to say that the "harder" list in Beyond is the same as the list in Bigger, so you wouldn't need the Bigger guide for the harder list. Does that make more sense? I feel like this is a riddle ;) If I remember right, Beyond has spelling list one and spelling list two. Bigger has spelli...

Re: RTR and Shakespeare or not??

I was back and forth and decided to get it. My oldest tends to forget it because the pages are separate (note to self, put them WITH the regular notebooking pages! duh me!) BUT she loves doing them. And I'm glad she's getting the exposure so when/if she does have a class where she has to do Shakespe...

Re: Advice for running 3 guides...

My advice is to stagger start them. Start doing the Preparing child at half speed... honestly, what I do for this couple of weeks is not worry about the math and English. Get them used to the flow of the guide, and used to following the directions in the I boxes. Then after a couple weeks, start the...

Re: More challenging spelling list for BLHFHG

The words on the spelling lists are the same in Beyond and Bigger. You would need the Bigger guide if you want to move into dictation :) My kids are awesome spellers and have never done spelling other than HOD spelling (word lists and dictation)

Re: New to HOD - do I quit the co-op my kids love?

Why don't you go to a more year-round schedule with regards to school? Then you won't have to worry about only doing three days each week. With that said. We do a similar class thing on Thursday's. My kids really enjoy going. But it's a fight to get them out the door on Thursday mornings! They refus...

Re: What to do? One child in 5 day, two children in 4 day

I just do everyone moves to the next day in the guide whenever the next day is that we do school... So my kids are generally on all sorts of different units and all sorts of different days at any given point in the year. I don't tend to stress about a schedule.
