Re: Thiking this through (ie. Planning)
I am running CTC, Preparing, LHFHG, and have a preschooler. Last year I was running RtR, Preparing, Bigger, and LHFHG (we've gone slow with my fourth... she has only begun reading). It is completely possible to be done with Bigger and LHFHG or Beyond by 11:30 every day. I'm a no nonsense, no rabbit ...

Re: Just venting
Bigger is perfect for 3rd grade! Like the earlier posters said, they are testing him on info their particular school has specifically taught the kids there. If you aren't getting done until the end of summer with Bigger, then the highest level they should expect (average or whatever) would be somewh...

Re: Preparing for Preparing
I use the larger 3 ring binders... I have a tab for history and a tab for science. I also have two one subject notebooks, one for copywork type stuff/poetry and one for English/dictation. I pre-punch holes in plain paper for notebooking/draw and write/etc, pre punch science lab pages, and have a bun...

Re: LHFHG or Beyond?
I would do the first option. If she does get bored (I really don't see that happening with a 5yo in LHFHG doing first grade math and ERs, honestly) then you could add in more science with experiment packages. We go through math at their own pace, so that adds in a lot sometimes when they are looking...

Re: Do you feel the need to add anything to HOD?
We put our oldest in a charter school this year for 8th grade. It's the first time she's gone to school (other than a year in a three half-day per week preschool program when she was 3-4). We used HOD from the beginning and never really added anything in (we do awana, have a ton of science experimen...

Re: Placement Questions and Emerging Readers
They don't need to be writing fluently until Bigger at least.. and even that you can make it work if they aren't writing well. Preparing and up is when they really need to be writing well. The Burgess books will help him be able to understand and comprehend the readings in Beyond and Bigger. They ar...

Re: Should I do Beyond over again?
I have repeated Beyond and it has gone well, but I repeated it because mine just wasn't really getting it still at the end of the guide. Not because of handwriting. First of all, you have a LONG time (for a 7yo) between now and starting Bigger. I think if you keep at it and slowly increase the amoun...

Re: Should I Separate Kids?
Based on what you said, I would separate them in Preparing. It would not be the same as doing it full time with both... not too teacher intensive I mean. You said your oldest is doing great with the guide, but your youngest is struggling with the I boxes. So I would leave the oldest as is, and let t...

Re: Placement help
I'm glad to see that's what you chose because that was my suggestion. Well, actually my suggestion was going to be Bigger for the 9yo, LHFHG for the just turned 7yo, and just the basics (math/FMS/handwriting type stuff with a bunch of fun read alouds) for the 5yo. But remember that you know them, an...

I'm so lazy...
I'm posting this to let other people who might be struggling know it's not just them! Now that I have one child going to school and two of them in mostly independent guides (Preparing is almost completely independent for us because they read their own history as well as the ind history and science),...

Re: Placement advice for LHFHG
If you think he would enjoy LHTH then by all means go for it! The other option, since you said he's doing well in LHFHG other than phonics, is to just do LHFHG without phonics and then start them when he's ready. I don't do phonics at all, so it works without the phonics instruction.

Re: Suggestions for starting out K & PreK w/ 6yr old & 4 yr
I agree... You could definitely try combining both in LHFHG this year. Just pay attention to if your older one needs more or your younger one needs to slow down. I combined my second (Grace) and third (Juli) in LHFHG at about those same ages. They are slightly farther apart in age, but were very clo...

Re: Balancing a busy schedule with HOD
We just do school when we do it and don't when we don't. If we want to go to the zoo or something, then that's what we do. I don't stress about it getting done completely each day. Most days we do get completely done. And with Beyond, especially with a child on the older end of the age range, it sho...

Re: multiple guides.... how to schedule?
:o wow... thanks! Yeah, if we don't keep all distractions to a minimum or if we have too much discussion (as in any other than questions/narrations) then we don't do a full days worth of school for that day. My brain can't do that  So we have to keep to simply what's written during our school...

Re: multiple guides.... how to schedule?
Like Stephanie said, once you get going you'll see how to overlap. Generally, if the child is placed correctly (and after you work out all the kinks), a child in Bigger will be able to do cursive, math after the teaching portion, copywork if you choose to do that, vocabulary, notebooking, and probab...
