Re: Earlybird math hangup...
I did both Kumon workbooks, Telling Time and My First Book of Money, with my ds because he was interested in them and wanted to continue past the brief intro in EB math. In the Kumon money workbook the first page of each lesson does introduce a topic, particularly in adding coins together, by doing ...

Re: Can I speed through beyond spelling lists?
Are you using List 1 or List 2? With my son (we're in unit 2) we just started with List 2--he's 6.5.

Re: Can we talk HOD lesson vs Singapore textbook
I was thinking of transitioning to the Home Instructors Guide then, instead of the textbook/teacher's manual (still trying to get a hang for what SM calls their different texts/manuals.) I may even make a change from the US edition to the new Standards edition at that time because there are a few th...

Re: Doing a program at half-pace question
Good morning! I'm working through Beyond at a modified pace now, myself. I'm trying to stretch Beyond so that we will finish it up around Aug/Sept 2010, when he would be almost 8, and start Bigger then. We school year round with him, so it should work out pretty well, but I won't be upset if he gets...

Re: summer break vs. continuing to school....
We've already started our guide for the coming year, and I plan on going 3-4 days a week to stretch it out, as I don't want to start him too early in Bigger the following year. We will be taking time off here and there as we have a vacation planned, and then ds goes away with his grandparents each s...

Re: Can't choose between programs, please help!
Can't answer your question as I am a few years behind you, but I wanted to welcome you to the board and bump up your message so that someone who may be able to offer some advice might see it! In the meantime, have you checked the placement chart on the HOD homepage? Start there and see where your ch...

Re: notebook for Beyond copywork
I bought a primary journal composition book at Walmart for ds to use for his copywork. It has the lines on the bottom of the page and blank at the top for drawing pictures. 100 sheets--so 200 pages. It's marked for grades K-2 and has the top blue line, bottom red line, and dotted middle line. (The s...

Re: Rod & Staff English 3 - TM or not?
I liked having it because there was a daily oral review or quiz that was listed only in the TM--I'm pretty sure this is in #3. I also used the worksheets and tests--answers are in the back of the TM.

Re: Do you need worksheets for R&S 3?
I used the worksheets with my older two, and will likely do the same with #3. We didn't use them the day we did the corresponding lesson, but the next day as review. The expense of the set is not all that great, and the answers are in the teacher's manual, if you own that.

Re: Need help choosing phonics?
I'll third Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. My son is 3/4 of the way through the guide (he just finished r-controlled vowels), and we are taking a break to work through some of the emergent reader schedule. I may add the rest of the guide in a couple of lessons at a time. His reading has...

Re: Skip Rod & Staff 3 ?
R&S is a very meaty grammar program from the start that builds from year to year. I have a friend who is a former high school teacher (I taught jr/sr high as well), and she uses the grammar 8 book with high school kids of all ages. The reason I mention this is because I think you can go right on wit...

Re: I think we found a misprint in Hstory Stories For Children
You're right, the Mayflower didn't arrive until 1620, but 13 years before that Jamestown was settled in what is current day Virginia. It was the first permanent English settlement in the New World. It's 400th anniversary was celebrated in 2007--Queen Elizabeth was on hand to commemorate the day. Fro...

Lynn, About the ice and wool and cotton. I have a son who is an avid fan of the show Mythbusters (He's almost 20--I'm not advocating the show for little guys as the people in the show can often use language inappropriate for little ones. We have learned some cool stuff from the show, though.) One of...

Re: New to HOD...LHFHG vs BLHFHG next year...wise council needed
I was in the same boat last year this time. I had a son 5.5 yo who seemed to place well into Beyond for math and phonics, but who is definitely all boy. I decided to go with LHFHG instead, and used the 1st grade options for fine motor skills. We have loved every second of it, and he has come a long ...
