Re: Subjects Covered

Are you in Ohio? Just curious because that looks like my list also. Yes, HOD covers them all. I saw that Stephanie replied already. The only thing I have to add to HOD each year is fire safety and first aid. That is because Ohio requires fire safety and first aid every year and I have to turn someth...

Re: Preparing or CTC?

Here are some of the differences I have noticed in Preparing vs CtC: Written narrations Preparing: 3-5 sentences. There are questions in the history section that help the student think through the writing assignment. And the parent is encouraged to help them get their thoughts down on paper Written ...

Re: Calculator use in Principles of Mathematics/Videotext Al

POM 2 does not use a calculator nearly as much. I was of the same philosophy as you....wow, they use a calculator a lot! But now that my oldest is using POM 2, she uses it way less and does a lot of math in her head or on paper. I think you child will be just fine going into VideoText with using POM2.

Re: The 3 R's when stretching out the guides?

You won't need to make any changes at all. You are on a perfect pace to complete the final high school guide in 12th grade.

Re: Returning to HOD & placement

If you finished out preparing, you could see how he does writing wise at the end of the year. This way you can determine if he would be ready to move up to CtC or RtR or RevtoRev by the beginning of next year. Or you could just do one level a year and have the 12 year old complete the extension. Als...

Re: Bigger or Preparing

If it were me, I would probably place him Preparing next year. Even though he is a late bloomer with reading, I found that the reading in Preparing really propelled my kids forward. You could use easier books for the DITHOR. In addition, in Preparing, some of the readings are longer but my kids LOVE...

Re: Delaying Beautiful Girlhood?

Your daughter sounds just like mine! She is turning 10 next week and she is also very involved in AWANA and Bible quiz (quiz for us is Feb 10th). I am going to go ahead and use the resource next year. My daughter is all fun and all play. But I really enjoyed using the book with my oldest. She was al...

Re: Ideas for Completing Guides?

You are not behind. My son is doing CtC for 6th grade. You are right on target. Even if you don't finish the final high school guide, it isn't a big deal. HOD is a very challenging program. There are things that you can tweek as you look toward the future and adjustments you can make for when they a...

You will have to report back and say what you think. I did think that book looked very interesting but stuck with the Genesis Study for my kids.

Re: Considering HOD

Write with the Best teaches many of the same elements as IEW only it teaches them differently. They look at different excerpt from famous writers and they analyze it. Then they write something of similar style. They do focus on using strong verbs, quality adjectives and quality adverbs. It isn't ide...

Re: Kids getting older

I am sure it is shocking to have a 12th grader. You probably walk around thinking...I am definitely not old enough to have a child this old LOL. Year has been a huge blessing!!!!! Got my box in and it was better than Christmas LOL. Now that I am not working nearly as much, I have enjoyed this year s...

Re: I need some ideas for boys

My son is very similar. His sisters will play with him some but a lot of time they like to work on crafts and stuff and he doesn't. He is usually left to himself and on his own. I do play with him some but not that much. One thing I would encourage you to do is let him be bored sometimes. It is fine...

Re: Kids getting older

That must be SO exciting for you! I can't even imagine how I will feel that year. We have been so blessed with HOD and I also started my oldest in the level Preparing. My youngest started in LHFHG and my son started in Beyond but I probably should have started him in LHFHG since he had to complete B...

Re: SAT/ACT

I think the prep books are very helpful for test taking, especially the strategies. I plan to get a book and have my kids go through the test prep book over the summer between 10th and 11th grade. They will probably do it independently mostly but I will follow up with them regularly to make sure the...

Re: Placement for 12 yo

I would probably start in RtR then. The IEW writing, especially the second edition is excellent. It starts out by teaching the kids how to take a source document and write from it. This will aid significantly in doing the written narrations. With these you will probably have to do a bit of hand hold...
