Re: Preparing Science: Reading too Difficult
I am uncertain from your question whether or not your concern is about the science preparing them well for the later science in general, or if your concern is about your son, specifically. Does he have dyslexia, like your older one? If dyslexia is not suspected, how is he doing with the Independent ...

Re: RTR problems with page numbers in IEW
This is a common question on the FB groups! Contacting HOD is the only solution, so hopefully Carrie or Julie can respond to you soon.

Re: Guide Prep Thread?
While I do make set up notes for myself the first time I prep a guide (with 8 kids it does save me time and help me remember what I did last time), and even share those notes in the HOD FB groups, the reality is that the guides themselves are the best thing to follow when setting up, especially the ...

Re: DITHOR questions
You can skip a book pack (eg go from 4/5 to 6/7), or you can have them do half the genres in school and finish the rest of the books as free reads or scheduled books over the summer. The first year you use the 4/5 workbook you do 4 or 5 genres (any ones you wish) and the second year you do the genre...

Re: High School Science
My older kids were not STEM bound and we did IPC as written, but added the quizzes and tests back in for 2 credits (as per publisher's recommendations). It was a LOT (1hr+/day). But, this meant they did not need a full credit of science in 12th. My next guy I am considering doing just the Physics po...

Re: Assessment for Kids
Gaps in skills or gaps in knowledge? Are you doing HOD as written, using what is recommended for grammar, writing/composition, and overall expectations? (If not, is there an academic reason or just personal preference?) Is she struggling with what is expected in HOD? If so, what areas? (Are you adap...

Re: How time flies!
I kind of answered all these questions in the summer thread, but just wanted to share how excited I am for all of you (and especially you, Carrie as homeschool mama) as you celebrate this milestone for Cole. May he and his bride be a blessing to your family and business/ministry, and may it be a ble...

Re: Summer...are you taking a break?
We are done! (Mostly. ) PS goes to the end of June here, so we are early this year. :D Our DD graduated in Feb, 15yo DS finished his year in April (so he could farm), 13 yo has 2 units left, 11, 9, and 7yos are done for the year and 4yo is still asking to "do school" almost every day. :) This ...

Re: CTC after PHFHG?
The biggest question to consider when deciding if you should skip a guide, is whether or not she has the skills to do so. Can she already write narrations as directed in CTC (5-8 sentences)? Is she ready for significantly more independence? Personally, I would avoid trying to skip a guide unless the...

Re: State history
HOD schedules studying your own state in MTMM. You could check that page of their website for a link to the option they have scheduled. You could use it early and then either skip it or do another state when you get to that guide. (I'm Canadian so have no insights into that resource for you, lol.) B...

Re: Drawing/Sketching in Bigger
I'll agree with the others that HOD can still be a great fit. My 3rd child, who is possibly gifted, definitely advanced, has never liked drawing and coloring. He avoided it even as a toddler. When we came to HOD (he was 9 and placed into CTC), he sometimes asked to skip the drawing assignments (whic...

Re: Placement prep questions
The comprehension/critical thinking questions for the ER books are available only in the Appendix of the Beyond and Bigger guides, so you would have to get a copy of one of those to "run" the ER set of books, as scheduled by HOD. I have had a 14 1/2yo (in 10th) with struggles with executive function...

Re: Please help! I need help with curriculum placement for my 3 children.
It's interesting that you list what your children were doing over a year ago as a starting point. While I understand your desire not to miss anything, the reality is that, despite the stresses of the intervening time, they have likely developed more skills than you are aware of. I think you need to ...
