Re: Dictation/Extension Words

We use a scribbler and every day (whether it's a new passage or not) we switch to a new page. For one son we cut the scribbler pages into three sections so it's like a flip book (the kind where you can choose an animal head, body and legs so they end up looking funny, lol). When he finishes going th...

Re: Carrie, you were right.

That's how we started "way back when" and it's really going to hurt when I actually have to do scheduled teaching in the p.m. We start at 8 (well, some of us, lol) and I plan to be done by 12:30 at the latest, but this is the first time it has been anywhere close, this year. My CTC guy still had 2 s...

Re: Carrie, you were right.

For the first time, all four children got close to, if not all of, an HOD day done before lunch today! Yay! :D :D :D I can see it won't happen every day and there are still lots of challenges, but it IS possible! We're off tomorrow (DH and I get to go Christmas shopping to the big city tomorrow - al...

Re: Carrie, you were right.

Yeah, it wasn't the best day, but we got our feet wet. Still some EFD issues, despite the adjusted workload/expectations. Now we've got most of our books to try to get more done on Monday. Still waiting for a few Bigger books and the Preparing Extension books to come across the border (they're @ Can...

Re: Carrie, you were right.

Thanks, Julie! I didn't see this till yesterday (duh! Didn't subscribe to my own thread!) and then had to think about what to do before responding. After talking with DH and with DS about CTC science we're going to move forward with that. I think he's enjoying it. We can always change if it doesn't ...

Bigger timeline

Does anyone have a picture or link to a blog post or something for how the Bigger timeline is supposed to look? We didn't do Beyond and one blog post I saw had it spread over 6 pages but that's not how I understand it from the text on the week 1 download. Our guide is en route so I can't look furthe...

Re: Carrie, you were right.

Good points, Daneale. Thanks for your input. Using 2 guides (CTC for science) will add some complexity for him (switching books, sharing books with his brother) but is probably for the best in the long run if he can manage it. Looking forward to hearing from Julie/Carrie to see if they agree. Blessi...

Re: Carrie, you were right.

Thanks, Pam. I know that some day there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, I just don't know if this arrangement will be the light I hope for. I've definitely had no "honeymoon period" with HOD, as I was anticipating (for over a year before we started it!), but maybe it will come yet. Thankfu...

Re: typing - Write With The Best

FWIW, my kids start whenever they're interested. I gave them time in school when the oldest 3 were around 6/7/9, starting with BBC Typing, then Mavis Beacon. The youngest of the group (probably about 7 by this time, plugged away at it and even the 2nd, but the oldest, especially was more motivated w...

Carrie, you were right.

Rice, I am so glad that you are sharing with us, and perhaps we can help talk through some options that may be of help to you. A few things in your post that reverberated with me are the facts that your older son really struggles with writing and that he has mainly had an oral CM foundation thus fa...

Re: Bigger driven pre-anxiety :)

Rice--had you already thought about the 9 yo doing Preparing with your 12 yo? I know it's taking time to get correct placements, but once you do, it's so wonderful. It's so hard when the kids have some learning issues--it's hard to see them struggle. Yes, they have been doing CTC together since Sep...

Re: Bigger driven pre-anxiety :)

Feeling the same here. 12yo is moving down from CTC to Preparing (Dysgraphia and Executive Functioning problems) and 10yo DD is moving from Preparing down to Bigger (very delayed reading skills) while 9yo is staying in CTC and 7yo in LHFHG. I don't think there's any way there'll be enough of me to g...

Re: DITHR-them reading & my time

I only have the kids (who are reading really well already) read aloud to me once or twice per genre. I will have to reevaluate that with my DD (the one doing Dianne Craft this year due to low reading level) when she starts DITHOR, but that's the only way my schedule works right now, with 4 kids in 3...

Re: Uncombining Proved a Wise Decision!

Glad to hear what you did. I've got 2 in CTC this year as well. My oldest placed squarely there, as did my younger one but in different ways. I see what you mean about the writing. I'll have to see how he grows into it before deciding if Preparing with Extensions might be a good extension for him (o...
