Re: Narration Vs. Summary

I agree with what Mel said that it is telling more of the details and thoughts that the dc had not just a summary of what happened. Here is a link to a past thread where Carrie discusses more in detail the differences and a few examples are given: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=...

Re: RtR science

I think the science box typically took my dc around 30 minutes each day and we did option #1. I'm not for sure when that book would be scheduled but if it is the same time as Exploring Planet Earth then I think it would definitely be doable without being overwhelming. The follow-ups with Exploring P...

Re: Carrie/Julie/Experienced HOD Moms - Placement Dilemma

I agree with the other posters. After reading everything that he has been writing, I don't think he will have a problem at all with the writing in CTC. You might want to look through the tips on written narration in Preparing since you have that guide just to help him get started with the written na...

Re: Carrie/Julie/Experienced HOD Moms - Placement Dilemma

It's a tough decision. When I read about your ds perfectionist qualities and reluctance in writing, I feel inclined to suggest that you stick with Preparing. For my dc, the jump from Preparing to CTC has been the most difficult one so far. It is big step up in the level of independence and the amoun...

Re: Another math question

Here is our experience. My dc finished 6B about mid-way through 5th grade. We tried Discovering Math 7A, but didn't like it. It just wasn't a good fit for us. So this year for 6th grade we switched to The Art of Problem Solving Pre-Algebra. We have really liked it. It's a good fit for my math loving...

Re: Singapore Math 6A/6B necessary?

I probably have a different viewpoint than others. For us Singapore 6 seemed like a lot of review without a lot of new thrown in, but I wouldn't say it was a waste of time. I think it helped solidify some good problem solving techniques and introduced a few new concepts. It didn't seem like we were ...

Re: Rev to Rev 1st semester book list

We haven't done Rev2Rev yet, but I have my guide here trying to work on our schedule for next fall, so I'll see If I can help you out. For History, Hearts and Hands, George Washington's World seem to be the main history books for the first 15 weeks. The Story of Napoleon starts in Unit 16, and The S...

Re: Hi I'm New and I have a quick question.

Yes, any sort of notebook will work for the common place book. Our first book we used a leather-like bound lined journal. This year I found these neat spiral bound journals that had nice 3D fronts that had a scripture on on them. I thought perhaps the spiral bound might hold up better for us but I'm...

Re: Should I do anything more to help dd7 with spelling?

I'm not well versed enough in dyslexia to know if that might be a problem. You could probably find some online assessments to help you assess that further and then have her tested if you feel that might be an issue. Just looking at the samples you shared, I would say she doesn't understand the sound...

Re: Singapore/algebra placement

Another possibility is check on the free videos that Art of Problem Solving (artofproblemsolving.com) has on their pre-algebra or algebra text. We are doing the pre-algebra book now since that was a good fit for my dc. I think he really sets the stage in the pre-algebra videos for things that are ne...

Re: New high school guide every year?

I believe it is her intention to release a new guide each year until the high school guides are completed. She is trying to stay ahead of her second son who uses the newest guide each year. Here is the scope and sequence of the future guides: http://www.heartofdakota.com/scope.php and a quote...

Re: Singapore 3A/3B - should I buy the textbooks?

I highly recommend the textbooks because that is where the teaching part really comes in. You could teach the material yourself but I think that would be more difficult to come up with examples, etc. The textbook gives great visual representations of the problems and talks through the why and though...

Re: Emerging Reader Question

That's awesome that he is loving reading that so much! I know that must really bless your heart. :D It is important with the Emerging Readers that you do the follow-up comprehension questions. It's a precursor to narration and really helps build comprehension. So if you want to let him have the Begi...
