Re: Boys to Men and FRUSTRATION

I'm by no means an expert, but can simply share what I have learned from my experience and through lots of reading. To begin with, I had an epiphany one day, when I realized how few years I have left with my son. It made me want to hold onto every moment I have with him and to make our remaining yea...

Re: Boys to Men and FRUSTRATION

My son is 12.5 and been a needing a lot more sleep! ... teenagers are going through baby/toddler faze again! That their bodies are changing just as much as when they were little bitty and that we need to be very conscious of their true need for more sleep. That to us is looks like laziness, but the...

Re: Is DITHOR a read aloud?

The lessons have the student doing both reading to himself and reading to you. If it is helpful, you can take a look at the first week of lesson plans at https://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/d1.pdf, to see how the reading is broken down day by day. I'm sure you can modify to fit your son's needs withou...

Re: Road Trip

Around the time we were finishing up Bigger Hearts, some of the places we visited were Monticello, James Madison's Montpelier, Mount Vernon, Appomattax, Gettysburg, Lee's Chapel, Stonewall Jackson's House (and more places that I can't remember right now) and found them all to be perfect places to re...

Re: Dual Enrollment Vs. HOD all the way?

These teens are still laying down a lot of patterns and developing their world view. The cost of college is no joke, but the cost of the struggle they may have as a result of those classes is also pretty great. I will pray the Lord gives you wisdom. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on being able...

Re: Using Foerster's Algebra with MTMM

You're welcome! :)

Just a note that the tests are LONG! When I made my son do all of the questions on the tests, it was taking a couple of hours. Once I cut back on the number of problems (as per Carrie's advice), my son was able to complete the tests in a reasonable time (an hour or less).

Re: Dual Enrollment Vs. HOD all the way?

Take this for what it's worth, because I am a non-conformer. It is difficult, because I'm surrounded by the public school mindset even though most of the people I know homeschool (albeit through co-ops.) I try very hard not to be driven by doing something for money or lack thereof, nor the world's ...

Re: 1st year doing HOD as a full time SAHM - what would you

As you can tell, spending time with kids is my ultimate priority right now. I feel like I have missed so much of their lives these past couple of years. I look at the ages of my kiddos and think they will be gone from the house in less than 10 years. I don't want to waste a minute! So if you could ...

Re: Spelling Woes

Thank you, all, for such great insights. It is reassuring to know we are not the only ones with this issue, and it is especially encouraging to hear that you are seeing progress through sticking with the dictation. That's going to be a priority for us in the fall, as well as trying some auditory and...

Re: Spelling Woes

This being said though did you look at the break down of the IOWA below the top scores. Under spelling is the break down of affixes, root words, and correct spelling. Are you talking about the break down of correct spelling or the total spelling score at the top? His scores are a bit all over the p...
