Re: Increased reading in Preparing
One thought with the slow reading-would it help you to move that outside of "school time"? One thing I've tried for my children at different points is to have special reading times. Build it up, make it a really fun time-maybe they can snuggle in a favorite chair, or on Mommy's bed with lots of pill...

Re: Using HOD for History
I think there is still a skill gap between LHFHG and Beyond with the History read-alouds. Your child will get much mroe out of the readings if they are on his level. Beyond requires a longer attention span that at best could not sink in with a student who wasn't ready, and at worst leave them frustr...

Re: New to HOD and want to combine children
I'd second the recommendation to look at LHFHG instead. In addition to the reasons Tidbits of Learning already mentioned, a big difference I noticed between Little Hearts and Beyond was the way Beyond requires an already-developed attention span, whereas LHFHG trains that. When you mentioned this in...

(((HUGS))), Melissa! I can hear through your words how overwhelmed and frustrated you must feel. Perhaps because I'm reading my own feelings into your post, though! We chatted a bit on another thread recently about a similar issue in my home, and your advice has helped me immensely (to utilize...

Re: If I want to combine 2 of my girls at this point...
I know that my attitude rubs off on the kids, and I'm wondering if you're bored with Bigger how your DD2 is doing with it? What about stopping that right now, finishing out her year with something else and coming back to it next year with both of your children (DD2 and 3?) I think Bigger is a great ...

Re: Thoughts on CLE Language Arts vs HOD language arts
Pam did a terrific job of answering your questions above! The one thing I wanted to build on was the creative writing-HOD begins to systematically teach this in CTC with Write With the Best. The time factor was the reason I had to switch from CLE math...I loved their spiral approach and my kids lear...

Re: charlotte mason philosophy
You wouldn't want to do Preparing twice. If you can't afford to change to Bigger (although I think if you bought from HOD they do have some sort of return policy if you bought the wrong level, but I am not sure of the details), then you could do Preparing half speed. You are technically a grade ahe...

Re: HELP Schedule!!
One thing I'm trying this year-and so far really like it-is to run our guides for about 6 weeks and then have a "reading unit", running a modified DITHOR, for 2 weeks (we also go year round.) During our reading units, I'm trying to get the kids through a genre in that 2 week time frame, so I'm picki...

Re: IS finishing a guide necessary?
I have skipped the end of a guide before...a couple of times... but don't feel there are problems because of it now. For my dd the guides we missed the ends of were below where my she should have been placed in the first place and she was more than ready to handle the next one. It just took m...

Re: Science Experiments
THanks for this reminder! I've been one of those moms frustrated by our continual failed experiments in Science, thinking that my kids can't possibly be learning anything from this. I't a great reminder for me that there is definitely learning to be done from even the "failures".

Re: Need help choosing package for struggling student
I have a 6th grader, whom I consider to be at grade level for reading and comprehension, and she's very challenged with CTC. This guide is so largely based on the child's growing independence that I don't think I'd recommend it for a struggling 6th grader. They are expected to read their own history...

Re: I must be doing this wrong...
My kids are only on Unit 11 and Unit 9. :) Don't feel bad! Our main goal is to teach them how to learn-they'll be learning for the rest of their lives, after all. :D It is an easy thing for me to get caught in the trap of having a goal to just.get.it.donealready!!! There's always some adjustm...

Writing in CTC
I have a dd that is a reluctant writer. How do I encourage her as she develops new skills in this area? Right now her writing is very basic, and sometimes vague. For example, today she was to write a sentence in the Genesis book to describe her beliefs about our fall into sin. Her sentence was "Adam...
