Re: Looking for FUN Back to School ideas

We try to do something different every year. Last year we took a trip to our local zoo then went out for a treat (Sonic). One year we packed a lunch and went to our city park's Splash area. We also go pick out new school supplies that they get to help choose. Usually they get candy or chips of their...

Re: Looking for placement reassurance (6 & 8 yrs)

Beyond does sound like a good fit for your son. :D As for your daughter, it depends on her maturity level & if she has the ability to do independent work. In Preparing they are to do science themselves, and have an independent section to the history. The oral narration you could always practice sone...

Re: The Reading Lesson

I agree with Raindrops, and our time with The Reading Lesson has gone much the same way. My ds struggled to get one page to begin with & we did do some review - I picked a page or two rotating them. After lesson 12, I think, he picked up on reading so quickly that we sped through and the last few les...

Re: Week in Review April 27-May 1, 2015

We've had a very crazy year of school. My dd finished unit 17 in LHFHG. She had a lot of questions, most of which she answered herself. Her favorite activity was the craft for the Day of Pentecost. You were suppose to tear paper to use, but ours 'disappeared' so, since she asked to use fingerpaint t...

Re: Lhfhg telling time and calendar help

StephanieU did a good job of explaining, but I did want to chime in to say every child picks it up at different ages. I use the guidelines above, but also use a couple rhyming songs once or twice a week during our "fun school" time. One child learned those in Kindergarten, one in 2nd grade, and my t...

Re: Placement help for DD

Hi jjn3beans! I am not LynnH, but I can answer most of your question Narration is basically your child telling you what stood out to them in the story, while a summary is a basic telling of facts given about a story. I have found being able to do both very beneficial. Hope this helps some! I'm sure ...

Re: 2 year old & LHTH

For the fingerplays, do you use a certain tune/song to sing them? Or do you just chant them? We are just beginning and I really love Heart of Dakota. We started Bigger with my oldest this year! I just found this post since it wasn't on the main board where more see it. For the fingerplays, some are...

Re: Older schedule, Research woes, & map work

I hope you found some answers for questions. (This wasn't posted on the main board or it would've had more replies.) As far as the questions about the books being read, HOD is more "Charlotte Mason" in style, meaning most questions are open-ended and have more than one right answer. We didn't do the...

Re: Revisit:Afternoons, socialization, and a philosophy of l

I wasn't part of the original thread because I hadn't heard of HOD back then. A very interesting read to be sure. I have to admit - I love to be home! We basically don't do any regular extracurricular activities. We have church service/Bible Study 3x a week and our church also occasionally does acti...

Re: Breaking for Summer

I hear you on being ready for a break! We've had a hard time focusing here lately. We normally finish up our regular school year May 15th (before the slew of birthdays, anniversaries, and out-of-state family visiting) This year we need another week or two. Then we always take 2-3 weeks before starti...

Re: Delaying Beautiful Girlhood?

I don't think it matters as much when you do the boy/girl study. I plan to use it totally independently of any guide. I believe it should be done when the child is ready.
I have never done higher than Preparing, but that is my two cents.

Re: New Homeschooler Please help!

Welcome! There is more to HOD and the phonics than meets the regular eye. You can't even began to see the benefits until you actually start doing it! That said, the phonics are set up in such a way to move at the child's pace whether fast or slow. You just make a progression through the chosen resou...

Re: What age to start Little Hands?

We first started LHTH with a 2 yo & a 4 yo. Most days we did an in-between stage, but other days we split and did a younger option one day, then older option the next. We took a short break from it to start my K'er on his year before starting it up again with my (then) almost 4 yo. We did the older ...

Re: Working on a rough schedule with 4 dc: PHFHG/BLHFHG/LHTH

We have a 10 am snack time for 10-15 minutes. During that time we listen to any CD's - Bible, music, verses, phonics, etc. Portion control is what I use for how we eat. It is not a free for all, but distributed by me. 1 yogurt or cheese stick with a handful of crackers, or chopped/sliced fruit. If th...
