Our year bombed

 we had a rather un-schooling (as in, no school, not the true unschooling definition) year this year. My oldest turned 18, and I tried to focus on him as much as possible. So...we are only on like unit 5 in all our HOD guides. Doh! Plus we added a niece to the family (yeah for a girl, finally! ...

Re: Bigger hearts with 2

I did bigger last year with my "middle two" and used the extensions for the older of the two. (they were 10 and 11 then) We did all the stuff together that we could, and then the older one worked on his extension readings, etc independently while I worked with the younger one. The one using the exte...

Re: How do you approach HOD with your 10 y.o. child?

I absolutely love the idea of a school store!! thanks!!! As for the original topic, I found my now-13-year-old the same as Julie described; he really hated the hovering I tend to do. He just wants to get things done! He;s like that with everything, not just school, though. We actually have to work o...

Re: Super heroes - ok or bad for kids?

We like super heros around here. :) My boys are also very caring, nurturing boys. I find it's a way for them to explore "good vs. evil" themes, and a way for them to overcome things in their imaginary play that they are having difficulty with in real life. On a side note, somewhere my youngest (he's...

Re: Stuck in Dictation....

that's what we do-just don't do dictation for a couple days. :)
I have also gone back to one of the passages that they did well on, so they can regain that sense of mastery.

Re: C. Miller/Guerber History Texts

I like the D'Aulaire's book, and I haven't read any of hte others. I like a lot ofthe Usborne books for myths, too. They are more of factual type book and less of a story book, though. :-)

Re: LHFHG

Well, we will have taken about two years to do Bigger when it's all said and done. But that's why I homeschool-so I don't have to worry about missing those great outdoor days, or other experiences when they come up. :-) In fact, my boys still take time off in the spring and the fall to help my dad w...

Re: Buying Books??

We have always used the library A LOT! And we quite often have late fees to go right along with that....poor planning on my part and we don't get them back on time, and more recently a lost book and a damaged book to pay for. So, when I make my next purchase I will be buying the books that go with ...

Re: DS doesn't understand long divison

I'm there with you-My 9 year old has a lot of difficulty with multiplication and division. I haven't yet found the "right" fit for him in math. I LOVE W2W's idea, though! I might give that a try today!

Re: Presidents study in any of the upcoming guides?

I don't know about future guides, but I think that's a great idea for you to do! I'm amazed at how much the boys have learned/asked about after I hung a poster of the presidents on the wall. They have asked about things like political parties, family relationships, and they even called my grandma to...
