Re: Copywork for Beyond
We have always used a large white dry-erase board for copywork. I bought this very cheaply at Lowe's home improvement store. At one time they were on sale for ~$3 or so for the large size, as they were on clearance with some other wall boards (these may have been samples, I'm not really sure). You c...

Re: The Bible as a Subject
Ours is very simple, so maybe not what you have in mind. We just read through a Bible story each day and color in a page from Calvary Chapel's children's bible story coloring pages. There's also some comprehension questions and a word search. We only do the coloring pages and sometimes the word sear...

Re: Those who are/have done a HOD program at half speed?
One more thing I wanted to add... At that age, I would check out lots of library books (picture books) and just read, read, read. I don't know which phonics program you use, but I would also make up some simple flashcards or type some simple words and sentences in large font, then work on these dail...

Re: Those who are/have done a HOD program at half speed?
Hi Sheila, I really don't know much about the Little Hearts book, as we never used it, but I can tell you how we're doing Bigger Hearts. We just started yesterday, so maybe you can take what I'm saying with a grain of salt... Yes, we are doing one side/page a day. We started with Learning Thr...

Re: Foreign Language and HOD
We talked about Latin today when we read our history reading about Columbus. My little guy was very interested, but we will probably wait a year or so to try it. We will most likely work with our Complete Book of Spanish workbook and our Spanish flash cards.

Great first day with Bigger!
We started Bigger Hearts... today, and we've had the best time! We're only going at half speed, so we only did the left side of day one, but so far it looks like it's going to be a winner. We will do math every day, even though we're going half speed. I plan to also cover spelling words and dictatio...

Just reading this now...thinking of you and your family and praying for you. How amazing how the Lord puts people in our paths (the paramedic) to help us.

Singapore Challenging Word Problems...
Does anyone add this in to their regular math work? I also wonder which level would be best for a child getting reading to do 2A level work.

Idea for keeping up with spelling words
I just wanted to post that I've been working this afternoon on writing out spelling words on index cards, and I had a lightbulb moment about how to store them for upcoming units. I cut the 3" X 5" cards to3" X 2 1/4", and each card makes 2 spelling cards. Now, the cool thing is that this size fits n...

Re: Making a Character chart for Bigger Hearts...
Just wanted to pop in to say that I'm busy working on my character trait cards. I'm very happy with them so far, and will try to post a photo if can figure out how. I still am undecided about how to display them though. I do want to say however, if you want to do something like this, I have found bi...

Re: What should I do? Please give advice...
Just wanted to add, as I forgot to say this in my earlier post... We will be starting up with Bigger Hearts in a week or so. After much thought and prayer, I have decided to work through it at half-speed---meaning, we will work on the Learning Through History side one day and then doing the Learning...

Re: What should I do? Please give advice...
Well...here is my advice and thoughts... When you say "behind"---do you mean as in important skills, like math and grammar/spelling/reading? Or do you mean just the guide as a whole, and you need to get them caught up to whatever lesson they should be on if they had continued with HOD? That's what I...

Re: Teaching calendar skills - days of the week, months, etc
I don't know if this helps, but I printed and laminated the days of the week, months and seasons from one of the Montessori printable sites. Montessori for everyone has on their site a freebie of the season names and photos that go with them. We used them on a mat, Montessori-style, and put them in ...
