Re: Skipping notebook pages CTC & up

The ideal, if not using the NBing pages, is to at least have a copy to look at for reference, even if the child uses their own notebook to write in, thus allowing you to reuse for multiple children or to resell. (Copying is against copyright.) However, that doesn't eliminate the expense up front. Th...

Re: Notebooking Pages: plans to print in NON high-gloss paper?

I would love if they had a non-shiny finish, too! While we have found solutions, they are not ideal, my kids don't like writing on them and they really dislike coloring on them. While my leftie is done school, the fact that pen didn't absorb or dry quickly was a particular trial for him. This is one...

Re: Does anyone else ever get the programs mixed up?

Yeah, and sometimes I'm like, "Why don't you know the answer to this; why don't you remember this? We discussed it just last week!" Only to discover it was their sibling who had covered it. But then there's the beautiful times, too, when they remember what they overheard a sibling reading/di...

Re: Placement help

Beyond for 2nd is NOT holding her back! :) That is perfect placement and based on what you've shared I think your reasoning is perfect. All those reasons you stated are reasons to start her in Beyond instead of Bigger. Preparing is usually best approached in 4th, so Beyond for 2nd makes perfect sens...

Re: History in Bigger

Bigger is not, in any way, a repeat of Beyond. If you look at the descriptions for each guide you will see that Beyond and Bigger, while covering similar time periods, focus on completely different people and events. :D Beyond: Travel to America, settle unfamiliar lands, and build a new nation along...

Re: New Products Coming...

Yay! I'm so happy for you! I'm sure it is such a delight to you to be creating in that way again. I know that I'm finding new freedom in having only 5 in school with only 1 high schooler compared to 7 kids and 3 high schoolers a couple years ago! As much as I cherished those times, these ones that a...

Re: Placement

If it was me, I'd bump the 11yo up. It's much easier to have each child where they place for skills. Keeping the 2 9yos together makes sense, even if you have different expectations of them (for example, the one finding things easy might, part way through the guide, be able to read the Science book ...

Re: Grammar Placement

HOD recommends finishing level 6 by the end of 8th, plus, one level somewhere (4 or 6, usually) is split over 2 years, so R&S 2 is plenty for 3rd grade. Personally, my kids skip R&S in Bigger (I don't care about covering everything every year and prefer to follow CM recommendations to start formal g...

Re: Can you use the older bigger guide with the newer bigger notebook pages?

Short answer: yes! There are a few units where you will have to come up with what your child should put in the NBing pages (it isn't explicitly stated in 20-25% of the units), but otherwise I've read and heard from others that it works just fine. There has also been an extra option added for R&S Eng...

Re: MTMM economics for High School

We're in Canada, so our options are definitely different, but I added a weekly podcast about marketing/economics/advertising strategies. Also check what your state considers a credit. Our province considers 110 hours a credit (55 hours for a half), while Carrie/HOD uses the guideline of 150-180 hour...

Re: New to HOD and need help figuring out what to order

If you had only your son to worry about, where does he fit best (using the skills on the placement chart)? Place him first, then decide if that placement is also a good for for your daughter by adding the Extensions and using her level of math and English. (Always place the younger one first with HO...

Re: Placement Help (Mom In Nursing School)

I think your placement of the older 2 in RTR should work well. They will be fairly independent and should not be overwhelmed. I would not try to combine two kids 3 years apart at that age, though. I would place your 8yo where they would comfortably place (likely Beyond; Bigger's also an option but w...

Re: How to move forward with a young advanced reader?

Oh, I understand the problem! My 10yo DS has had struggles due to vision issues and was only part way through the ERs when now-8yo sister was ready to start them. He left the ERs, did Sound Bytes Reading, attempted the ERs again and then started vision therapy (best decision ever) in the time she sp...

Also remember that, if doing the workbooks, then the books they read are not supposed to be at their instructional level where significant mental energy goes into decoding and comprehension. Instead, choose a book pack that is slightly easy for her to read, so that she has more mental energy to put ...

Re: Placement help

I agree, too. LHFHG is a great 1st grade year! Of course, you would do math at his level (simply using the Math box as a reminder to fit that into your day), and go ahead with the reading program you have planned. If you would like to switch over to HOD's Emerging Readers program at some point, you ...
