Re: Start R & S English in 2nd or wait a year
The problem isn't so much with R&S 2; it is with the higher level books. They get very deep in the later levels. I've been through the grammar from grade 2 through the grade 8 text with both my older kids. Ideally, imo, you want to be doing that level in high school. Starting the grade 2 text in 3rd...

Re: Okay Ladies...needing help!
If you went with Beyond for the older two, you would still use the appropriate math, spelling or dictation, etc for your oldest. Since dictation isn't scheduled in Beyond, you could have her use the Bible verse for each unit, or passages from books she is reading. If she's ready, you could also use ...

Beyond Bio: Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims sequel
We've just wrapped up unit 4 of Beyond and have finished our bio--Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims. This week while at the library I was picking up our adventure title for units 5-8. I'm trying to keep to historical figures/places we've read about already or will read about in the near future. Went w...

Re: Need Advice for Phonics Program in Beyond
Are you referring to the R&S 2 reading program or grammar? If it's grammar, the pp took care of that. If you are talking about their reading program, you wouldn't really need that. Carrie has an excellent emerging reader schedule in the Beyond guide. it uses The Beginner's Bible (or another choice f...

Re: R&S 2 or 3?
I've used R&S grammar with my two older kids all the way through, and the program gets quite meaty from 4th grade on. I would say to not get ahead of the schedule Carrie has planned. IMO, the ideal is to do grade 8 of the R&S grammar in high school--maybe even grade 7 as well. Sooooooooo much there.

Re: LHFHG or BLHFHG
I would definitely go with LHFHG, too. When we did it last year, my son was not quite reading as well as your dd, but close. I just supplemented his phonics lessons with easy readers from the library. He was ahead in math, so I started with EB 2B instead of 2A, following the lessons about 15 weeks a...

Re: English 2 for a 1st grader?
I like your plan of holding off with R&S until your kids are a year older--not because grade 2 is so rigorous, but because there is so much meat in the rest of the program, that I feel it is better that children are older when they get to it. Looking at Preparing, it gives you the option to use R&S ...

Re: First Day Jitters
Another alternative to NIV is the ESV. I bought one within the last year and really, really like it (have had and used NIV since it first came out in the late 70s/early 80s and now prefer ESV, ymmv). Also, do not get down on yourself if your daughter hangs on to those ps ways for quite a while. I've...

Re: 1st grade bible in LHFHG
When I bought LHFHG last year the 101 Fav Stories schedule was either tucked in the back of the book--folded on loose printer paper--or I printed it off the HOD homepage.

Field Trip for Beyond!
1st some background......we started Beyond less than a month ago and are moving through it slowly to stretch it out until the fall 2010. After we finished week 2 (Jamestown) our son was in the car with dh coming home from his workplace. They passed a huge road sign "Jamestown." Ds read it and exclai...

Re: More language arts questions, especially writing
I've used all of R&S grammar with my older two kids. If I were in your place, I'd start both kids in R&S 2.R&S grammar is a meaty program, and I am in the better late than early camp for starting it. My goal for my youngest is to have him in R&S 8 in 9th (or preferably, 10th) grade--if you put them ...

I'd put your eldest in Preparing just so she'd have another year to enjoy Carrie's wonderful guides!

Re: New with questions
My son was almost 6 the year I was making this decision. He was very strong in reading and math skills, however, his writing skills and ability to concentrate while listening to stories, as well as to pull information out of a story and tell it back to me were minimal. According to the placement cha...

Re: Language arts in Beyond?
You're good to go! Copywork, poetry, spelling, weekly grammar lesson, reading, storytime--it's all there! Great, isn't it? We've just wrapped up Unit 2, after working through LHFHG, and I love Carrie's guides. I have added in StartWrite for ds. Each unit I put in his memory verse, which he copies at...
