Re: On the subject of planning and scheduling....

I've used Homeschool Easy Records since my 20 yo was in middle school. I LOVE it. It generates daily/weekly lesson plans, progress reports, report cards, and transcripts. When he needed a transcript a couple of weeks ago to prove to the university he's transferring to that he took 3 years of foreign...

Re: Common Place Book--favorite styles?

It's one of those big Walmarts--in the stationery section, where they have the day planners and stuff. About the size of a dvd box in width, but a little taller. The first one I found was at Target in a similar section of the store, but I noticed them in brown and black leather at Walmart less than ...

Re: Which program are you using this year and when do you start?

The big girls are going to my in-laws for a week on the 15th of August -- aaahhhhhh... Oops -- did I say that out loud?? So that will give me a week to put the school stuff together and spend some alone time with my little one. Our youngest leaves tomorrow for 10 days of camping with h...

Re: Young 1st grader in Beyond or Little Hearts?

I think it is a tremendous idea to start a young 6 yo in Little Hearts. I did this with my son (late 5 when we started in the summer, turned 6 in October) last year. He was in no way ready for the listening in Beyond, but was ready for Beyond in reading and math. Now we're slowing down Beyond and pl...

Re: Which program are you using this year and when do you start?

We've been homeschooling for more years than I can remember...16? 17? I've lost track. My dd is a rising senior--hard to believe. Her coursework is all settled, just need to get a couple of months of lesson plans under my belt over the next couple of weeks. My youngest is 6.5, and we will finish uni...

Re: Common Place Book--favorite styles?

I have a common place book of my own--quotes from books, sermons, etc. from as far back as 1985 or even earlier. I have a Moleskine http://www.moleskines.com/?gclid=CPip_eyq-JsCFSRPagod-VnI_A book for mine, but I've also seen a nice leatherbound journal type book at Walmart that would work equally w...

Re: Need help, Again...LOL(edited to add more info)

Another means of assessment for grammar is the optional tests--they are cheap and the answers are already in the TM, if you own that. I can't remember if they have tests available for the 2nd grade text, but know that they do for all the others.

Re: Rod & Staff Grammar 3--Do I NEED the TM?

R&S texts are very reasonable in price, and I always purchase the TM for grammar and here's why. 1st: there is daily oral review found only in the TM, 2nd: in addition to the review are occasional oral quizzes, 3rd: the TM includes all the answers to the worksheets and tests, both of which I use wit...

Re: Carrie---another R & S question.....

Absolutely agree with the previous poster. Both my older two (20 and 17 now) used R&S grammar the whole way through. I saw things in their grade 7 and 8 texts that I've never seen in any other grammar book. While I covered the texts on grade level with the older two, they both covered the 8th grade ...

Re: schedule for emerging readers

Schedule of books with questions to ask (comprehension, analysis, knowledge, narration, etc.). Huge help to have them right there at your finger tips. The schedule is in the appendix in Beyond and Bigger.

Spelling in Bigger

Are the words in the Bigger guide different from the words in list 2 in the Beyond guide? Thanks!

Re: Half speed for Bigger?

Ana, Your concern is the very reason I sat down yesterday and wrote out a schedule for my son so that he will be 5th grade when he starts CTC and will finish the guides Carrie (so far) plans to write at the end of 8th grade. It is a valid concern. As of right now, I plan on extending both Beyond and...

Re: Half speed for Bigger?

I just worked this out yesterday for my son who is almost 7, but is viewed by the county as a 1st grader because of his late birthday. I don't think he will be ready for Bigger next fall when we would normally get to it. Plus, I want to be able to finish the guides as planned at the end of his 8th g...
