Bridging the Storytime Gap Between Guides

We started back full-speed with LHFHG this week after a long sabbatical due to morning sickness, vacations and VBS. We actually ended today by starting the left side of Unit 13. For the right side, we are ahead in the guide. With Math, my plans are to just purchase the Beyond guide for the hands-on ...

Re: Week in Review June 10-14, 2013

My week in review of LHFHG is very short as we mainly focused on Phonics, FMS and Math. But, I wanted to share one of the math activities with everyone here. I LOVE Carrie's hand-on activities! I used Carrie's idea for Unit 17, Day 3, but instead of drawing circles on paper, I used peanut butter and...

Re: Placement Advice for 6 yo turning 7 yo in Oct

agstefko - Thank you! That is very encouraging! I do just need to enjoy the ride. I have learned a lot about comparing myself and my children to others this year. I have made a very conscious effort to just accept her where she is and forge ahead. I think I probably set my expectations too high from...

Re: Placement Advice for 6 yo turning 7 yo in Oct

Thank you everyone! This was very helpful! Julie - We had VBS last week, but on Monday of this week, I did go ahead and charge ahead with working with her everyday on Phonics, FMS and Math. I already decided for next year to drop almost all of the extracurricular activities we had scheduled. And I m...

Placement Advice for 6 yo turning 7 yo in Oct

Hi everyone, I am greatly struggling with placement for next year. We started using LHFHG with my 6 yo daughter during this past year for her Kindergarten year. She will turn 7 yo in October. I have not been great at all about getting school accomplished on a daily basis with our full schedule as I ...

Re: Finishing LHFHG in a couple of weeks!

That is exciting (and encouraging)! I remember reading your blog a year ago when I was struggling with my DD who was giving me fits with school at the time. She was 5 yo then. She turned 6 yo in October. Your struggles sounded very similar to mine. And then I booked our schedule solid again this yea...

Re: Social studies & health

I just wanted to add that you may want to check your state requirements to make sure that reporting is even required for Kindergarten. It may very well be, but some states don't require reporting for homeschool purposes until the child is 6 yo (and I think even later for some states) as of a certain...

Re: Struggling with finding a balance

Thank you all for your very encouraging advice!!! I just love this forum and all of the wonderful ladies on it! Oddly enough, when I had just one child, I couldn't stand being home all the time. I wanted to get out and do something! Now I just want to stay home and enjoy my children. I signed her up...

Struggling with finding a balance

So I have two girls, ages 6 and 2. My oldest is currently in LHFHG, though we are only on Unit 9 (left side). I have been able to at least manage keeping up with the Three R's fairly regularly. We started LHFHG in May 2012! So, you think we'd be a little further along. I LOVE Heart of Dakota, and I ...

Re: Teaching a Left-Handed Child to Write

Thanks Julie! That thread was also very helpful! And a comment that Carrie had made in it really hit home with me too. She said, "I wouldn't focus on the grip continually though, but rather praise his writing, giving gentle hints to pull in his elbow just a bit toward his side as he writes." As my h...

Re: Organized for the new "year"

I do the same thing! Though I only have LHTH and LHFHG right now. But, I put everything in one box and then just climb in the attic when it is time to switch storytime books. We don't have much space in our house, so it really helps to somewhat contain the clutter. I also store things I have found t...

Re: Teaching a Left-Handed Child to Write

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I don't think I realized until just recently WHY left-handed children write their letters backwards. I wish I had known more about this when she was three or four as old habits are hard to break! Though she is starting to remember which ways the letters and numbers...

Teaching a Left-Handed Child to Write

Does anyone have any tips on teaching a left-handed child to write? I understand that the underside of the forearm and thumb should line up while writing for both left-handed and right-handed children. But, I know that left-handed children can smudge their writing if they hold their hand similar to ...

Re: OT- Bedtime Routine HELP

So I'm probably not much help as I only have 2 girls in separate bedrooms, but I have always struggled with getting my oldest to go to sleep at night. She is a night owl like me. So, I also implemented the ticket system a few years ago. She gets one ticket to come out in the middle of the night OR t...
