I always start my school year in July. Just sayin'...
The weather is miserable here in July and so starting early gives us time to take off when the weather is actually nice.

Re: Rod and Staff Teacher's Guides
I did not use the teacher's guide for level 2, as per HOD's recommendations. I have for level 3 and level 4 and have found it very helpful. There's oral review each day, which helps my kids remember concepts and words from previous lessons. The answers make for quick and easy grading and honestly th...

Re: Struggling checking their work...suggestions?
I agree! HOD has provided some much needed structure for us, and at least the outline of good expectations and habits. I can't do it all and I can't do anything perfectly and somehow God still works and they still learn so in the end, I think it will be a wonderful blessing to have homeschooled and ...

Re: ADHD Help- Preparing AGAIN
Okay, so some of those read-alouds had VERY long readings (I just finished Preparing with my 10 year old). I myself felt like I could fall asleep in the middle of them (well not really, but you get my point). I can totally see how a child with ADD would struggle to follow along. And it sounds to me ...

Re: Spiral Bound Guides???
I do not spiral bind. I would think perhaps the pages would rip out of that more easily than they would out of the original binding. People who do that I think want it to open and lay completely flat - though HOD uses a special type of binding that is supposed to do this better than most books of th...

Re: Common Place Book
There are assignments for the Common Place book, mostly copying the memory verse(s) memorized. I believe when they memorize a poem they copy that in there as well. But I read a really good explanation of what the Common Place book was for and so I have encouraged my kids to do this: it's basically f...

Re: CtC Young Earth
So obviously when talking about creation the Young Earth philosophy is evident. The timeline made reflects that point of view, though they are highlighting in there that if you do not subscribe to this view you might omit or change those Timeline entries. Genesis Finding our Roots has an in depth pr...

Re: Struggling checking their work...suggestions?
With the ages and number of your kids, I would amend my suggestion (which was really just a description of what I do) and say maybe you could plan for once a week a longer meeting time with the older ones. Because I assume that you, like me, don't struggle with grading little ones' work because ther...

Re: Struggling checking their work...suggestions?
Oh mama. Grace and peace to you friend! I completely understand this struggle because I share it - and I only have one who does a lot of work on her own at this point. Unfortunately my daughter is one who gets lazy if she's not checked up on regularly. Just recently I went over her past 2 weeks of w...

Re: Newbie
I like StephanieU's list of Pro's and Con's. I have been using HOD for 8 years now and feel it is complete, academically challenging, interesting, engaging, and Christ centered. The last is the main reason I love it so much. I agree with faroutback's statement that things are introduced at an approp...

Re: Help me understand…..
Your placement for your 9YO and 6YO sounds good to me. Those would be good places to start. LHTH is really flexible and I think it can be a preschool program or even good for a K level child, adding on anything the child may be ready for in terms of fine-motor skills, handwriting, or starting readin...

Re: Book substitutions for LHFHG in place of Thornton Burges
You can maybe identify why you don't like them. Some people don't like how mischevious the characters are. How they trick one another or call each other names. Some aren't used to the language and longer readings with fewer pictures. I would try to pin down what the issue is. I think if you as the p...

Re: Thiking this through (ie. Planning)
I personally like the idea of doing Beyond with both IF you think personality wise they would be able to enjoy working together through things like orally narrating, answering questions, Bible verse recitations, and activities. I think you would find that much more managable and still be able to giv...

Re: Placement question
If your younger one fits in Res to Ref and the older one can do extensions that seems like it would work well. I'm not that familiar with either of the programs you were in, but HOD is challenging enough for anyone, as they have to manage themselves, follow directions, be detail oriented, etc. I ass...

Re: Preparing for Preparing
I have a pencil box that I keep the larger 4X6 index cards in (3X5 are definitely too small) for vocabulary. I put in some cards with tabs on them for each letter to aid with alphabetizing. I had also tried a notebook with tabs for letters, but it turned out really sloppy (of course that was with my...
