Re: What is the importance of diagramming?

When I went to Bible School we were required to take a course called Hermeneutics - which is basically a course in how to interpret and understand the Bible clearly and accurately. We studied many things such as historical background and context, how to study greek words etc., but the bulk of the co...

Re: Doctrinal issue. Please,any advice?

I am just finishing up with teaching Beyond to my daughter. I had some concerns that are similar to yours - I wanted my children to understand both sides of colonization - both from the sides of the native people and the colonists. I didn't feel that all of the stories in the guide were ones that I ...

Re: 4 years ago today HOD came through for us

I too am very grateful for HOD and the beautiful resources they have introduced me to. It is a joy to read the selection of living books and we are finishing up our third year with HOD. I love the idea of supporting HOD by buying all your books through them...... And I do find their prices to be ver...

Re: Difference b/t Beyond-Bigger writing

This has more to do with the drawing side of things...... But I thought I'd throw it in there. I have a book called Drawing with Children By Mona Brookes. It is a book to teach you how to teach your children to draw. In this book, she takes drawing very step by step and talks about lines and circles...

Re: help with beyond

If I were you I would take a close look at the books listed for the Emerging Readers and the Level 2 book pack. Your child should be able to read the books fluidly, without struggling or stopping to sound things out in order to be placed correctly. So just take a look at the books on the list, and e...

Re: Feeling terribly guilty and discouraged..

I think it is normal to feel discouraged as a mom, and the area of homeschooling is no exception. My daughter is in Beyond this year too. We have had our ups and downs...... We modify the guide to suit my goals for her and her capabilities. Here are some thoughts. 1. Give yourself permission to take...

Advice for Ordering Bigger and DITHOR

Hi there, I am getting ready to order my books for Bigger Hearts and DITHOR but I am confused about what books to get. First, do I need Book Projects to send home in order to do DITHOR, or is that optional. Second, is the level 2/3 book pack designed to be used with DITHOR, or is it just for extra r...

Re: Little Hands w/5yo?

This past year I planned to do Little Hands with my 3 year old and 5 year old. As it turned out, the activities were too simple for the five year old, and too advanced for my 3 year old! Oh well! We ended up using the Bible Story book (New Bible in Pictures of Little Eyes) which they both do enjoy. ...

Re: I'm going to cry

I haven't done Bigger yet, but my experience with the earlier guides is that I don't need a supply list. If you read through the intro, and the first week of lessons, you will know what "school supplies" such as notebooks, index cards, pencil crayons etc. that you need. The lessons throughout the gu...

Skip Early Reader's Bible?????

My daughter who is 7 is just finishing the Reading Made Easy book. When I told her that we were going to move on to reading books, she was excited. But when I told her that the first book would be the Early Reader's Bible she was dissapointed. Not because she dislikes the Bible, but because she has ...

Re: Holding scissors wrong--LHTH

I think all of my children have held scissors incorrectly to begin with. But as someone else mentioned, it really does not take long for them to switch and hold them correctly when they practice. I agree that it is best to encourage them to do it the right way from the start. It is good for them to ...

Re: Does HOD include phonics "rules" for spelling and readin

Thanks, Mel in Kansas, for your advice. I like your idea about starting the emerging readers 1/2 speed. She is eager to get on to some longer and more interesting stories. I also like the way you handle the spelling. My daughter sounds very similar to yours - is easily discouraged by getting words w...

Re: Does HOD include phonics "rules" for spelling and readin

Maybe you can advise me on her reading too. I have just been working straight through the Reading Made Easy, doing one lesson a day rather than the three per week as the book recommends. I feel like it might be a bit much to do two per day - although maybe one in the morning and one at night could w...

Re: Does HOD include phonics "rules" for spelling and readin

Maybe the reason we are running into some issues is that we are a bit behind in the reading and my daughter hasn't had as much practice with that. (My husband wanted to help with reading last year, but didn't continue with it after Christmas..... I didn't want to step on his toes last year so I wait...
