Re: prep time weekly?

My oldest is only in Preparing, but here is my experience. I make copies and look ahead about once every 3 months. Then at the end of each week or two I look ahead only that far. There are a LOT of things most people have on hand that we do not - such as toothpicks, Cheerios, cotton balls, etc. I do...

Re: How could we best fit 5 into guides?

For the oldest I am not that far along - so I am not as sure. I would look at the placement chart and focus on Revival to Revolution on up for her. The next two, Preparing popped straight into my mind for them. However I would double check with the placement chart. The younger two. Since you said th...

Re: Should we be finishing Beyond in an hour?

My Beyond child finishes in an hour to maybe 15 min extra. That included R&S workbook and Explode the Code because he asks for those. He is my more "motivated, get it done, no frills" child. I think that makes some difference. It also makes a big difference with how far you are into the guide. I thi...

Re: OT: "Fluff" reading

My mom was always careful, but she also taught me at a very young age what was appropriate and what was not - because I read too fast for her. A few of the books could be considered nonsense, but most were good. I also reread books - over and over. Yes, my mom also did limit my reading time. There w...

Re: Science in Beyond

When my very Science oriented child was doing Beyond, we followed the book for the "official" part of school. However we added in a book about solar systems, simple experiments, and whatever else interested him at the time. My child doing Beyond now is not that interested in Science, and what is sch...

Re: Placement advice with several questions

I can't help with everything, but I can give a few . . . 1. 3 guides is totally possible when they are properly placed. 2. Preparing on up starts teaching them "S" semi-independent, "T" teacher led, and "I" independent. 3. There is a LOT of writing beginning in Preparing. 4. I am sure your 3 yo woul...

Re: Which guide to choose?

Welcome to the Board! StephanieU gave a lot of great advice. You would not want to do a guide above the skill range of your child. You checked the placement chart? The most important thing is making sure they can complete the writing, narration, etc. and not where they are history wise. Grammar and ...

Re: need advice for structuring free reading time

We do have a structured reading time for about an hour in the afternoon. My children quit taking naps, but Mom still needs one so this was one solution! We also give reading time at bedtime, if they cooperate and get to bed when they should. I try to read to them also, and we have plenty of audioboo...

Re: Beyond, and "Indians" (First Nations / Native Peoples)

Interesting topic. Love seeing what others say. Where I come from though "Indian" is the preferred term, mainly because it is easiest. I, myself, am part Cherokee & Choctaw. I consider myself part Indian, though I know that is not quite accurate. For you, I believe StephanieU 's post had good merit....

Re: Week in Review: March 17-21

We were only able to do full days of school Tuesday through Thursday. We finished up our units and we are taking a "Spring Break" even though it snowed last night! Thankfully it melted today - hope it warms up as well. PHFHG We finished Unit 21, and Grandpa's Box , a fact that made my DS sad. :( It ...

Re: Week in Review: March 10-14

Julie, I loved reading about your boys' week! "Key to the Treasure" was one of my favorite books growing up. :D I got to share my (very old) copy with my oldest in Beyond. Looking forward to my second later this year. Over the past two weeks between appointments and illness we have gotten 1 unit don...

Re: LHFH for K

Some families only do school 4 days a week, which makes a guide last about 9 weeks longer. (This is in the younger guides- Bigger on down- where a unit is scheduled for 5 days a week) Others will start off half-speed (left side one day, right side the next), making it 2 weeks for one unit for awhile...

Re: Placing a child who is "all over the place" skill-wise?

I really can't offer much advice ... Just wanted to tell you a bit about ours. My oldest has mild disabilities in reading and writing, therefore he decided if he couldn't do that well, that he couldn't do anything. He had a MAJOR attitude about everything related to school. After talking to a seasone...

Re: Where do your older kids do school?

When I was doing school I worked best completely alone in my room. I was also very motivated to get school work done. My children are different - 2 of them can't work if they don't have noise or distractions! One of them does do several subjects better with relative quite. I have rewards for them of...

Re: Worksheets in R&S English

I use the worksheets with my oldest because he struggles with every part of LA. They seem to help him and he enjoys them more. His English comprehension and work have actually improved since I started using them.

That said, I think it depends on the child.
