Common Place Book
I've been reading through old posts, and every now and then I run across something called a "common place book." What is this and when does HOD start utilizing one? Why is this important? Thanks!

Re: OT: Homeschooling a child who does not want to homeschoo
Just echoing that your empathy for her touched me as well. Especially at this age, I think its important to have empathy for our preteens and early teens. I've had my heart softened toward my dd12, who is quite moody, and I try to see things more her way. Sometimes it sways me and sometimes it doesn...

Re: We love Beyond! Thanks!!! :-)
I wanted to add our thanks as well. We've just started Beyond. I wasn't going to start it for a bit, but DD kept bringing me the guide and asking to do it, so we started. When starting the second day, she started jumping up and down, excited for what was to come. She acted out the poem, "The Storm,"...

Re: OT: Homeschooling a child who does not want to homeschoo
I'm not sure what I'd do. I might be inclined to wait a month or so before telling her, though then she doesn't have as much time to get used to the fact that she's going to be homeschooled. I might use that month in praying over her, asking God to soften her heart. Since this is His plan, He's work...

Re: Placement help 4th grader 9 1/2 yr.old
Even though I wasn't comparing Bigger and Preparing, this thread has helped immensely! I chose Beyond for my 3rd grader, though she placed in between Beyond and Bigger. Her reading is slower, but her writing is more advanced. She'll do Bigger in 4th grade as well. We've started Beyond, and so far ev...

Re: Math question?
I would let them. They're just like manipulatives. Each child is different, and my non-mathy child still uses her fingers every once in a while (though she has known problems with memory and is mildly dyslexic), while my extremely mathy child has no reason to. My youngest never learned to use them, ...

Re: Breaking for Summer
We school year round. We start the new manual tomorrow. We will take some time during the summer to play and enjoy but need to keep moving. We will take time off through out the year as needed for our life I thought as the girls aged they would want more summer time off. In the beginning of our hom...

Re: Getting Ready for HOD
Thanks Julie! I meant I would use my current curriculum for another year, then place a then 7th and 8th grader in Rev to Rev and use that for a year. Maybe if I work more on independence this upcoming year with them would be the best thing to do to prepare them. I was hoping to keep them together, j...

Re: DS has tears of joy!
That is so wonderful. My heart constricted a bit when you asked why you were so quick to doubt the Lord speaking to your children. I, too, have doubts about this, and your posts has softened my heart to seeing the Lord working in their lives. And can I say something else? I feel like the Lord is lea...

Re: Breaking for Summer
Our year has just stretched out with no end in sight! One of my problems with our current program and the reason I have come to research HOD, which I'm going to give a try! We have 36 weeks in our program, and we are only on week 25. We're keeping on track the last month, but I've had to take some s...

Re: New Catalog Arrived!
Just resurrecting this old thread. I received an HOD catalog too, and after having some problems with our current program, I decided to really dive into the catalog. Can I say that this catalog is the best I've seen in a long while? My copy is ragged and some of the pages are falling out. I take it ...

I might be inclined to go with 3, completing the whole book this year, though I've not used Rod and Staff. I'll bump the post for you anyway.

These are some great tips! It's nice to see that the emerging reader set flows from late second and progress in difficulty. I have many of these books, so we'll be reading these with my DD this upcoming year.

Re: A Child's Geo. in CTC
I actually love your candor in this post! Reading a negative review on a book doesn't usually daunt me, depending on the complaint. It doesn't sway me from trying it, anyway. While one person despises a book, the next person raves! A few books that come to mind are The Door in the Wall and Follow My...

Re: Field trip ideas for Res2Ref and Rev2Rev
This is right down my alley! Well, that and cooking time-period food. Not many road trips for us, but this would be my bucket list for my kids and DH and I to visit. My favorite things to do for school. :) Excited to see more! 1. National Mall (Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, White House), Na...
