Re: Singapore Primary Math Home Instructor's Guide???

I just wish I had an answer key! I don't want to have to do all the math myself to check her work!! But I don't want to pay $25+ for the IG just for an answer key....

Half-speed to full-speed fears

I think I've come to the conclusion that I need to slow down Preparing for dd. She is handling it ok, but getting it all done is pushing it at full-speed. I'm worried that she won't be able to handle CTC next year, and I'd like to get her more in the middle of the age range for the manual. ANYWAY, m...

Use a cookie sheet with a rim all the way around so the honey doesn't run off and burn on the bottom of your oven!! Our Egyptian Bread craft turned into a lesson in fire safety as smoke filled our kitchen!!

Re: What do you do when you miss a couple of days in the week?

I guess the problem is that I want to be able to pick up the Guide and know that on Wednesdays, we are always on Day 3, for example. I don't want it to be Wednesday, and I'm at Day 5 or Day 1 or something. I know that sounds so SILLY! LOL!! I can't even believe I wrote it, but there you go. I...

Re: Afternoons, socialization, and a philosophy of life

My oldest is 9, and we have never done any outside activities (team sports, music lessons, etc). Sometimes I feel like they are missing out (our area is very "upwardly mobile" and most people have their kids in team sports by age 4), but we really like being at home. I have found that with a little ...

Re: CTC users

Hi Alison, I just wanted to comment on my similar experience with Preparing. We are part of a co-op, and I originally wanted to use HOD's history portion to substitute what they were doing in co-op (because I didn't like the curriculum they'd picked out). I was happy with our spelling, grammar, writ...

Re: Buying Books??

I buy the books because I don't think you can EVER have too many books! Plus, I plan to use them with the younger siblings. I'll just say that every book we've used so far has been worth every penny, they are such high-quality books. I also have to admit that if I tried to check them out of my...

Re: Do you follow a "school Year" or your own?

I follow year-round school "loosely"--meaning, we just keep continuing to do school, but allow time off for sickness, "life", good weather (which does NOT happen in the summer on the Gulf Coast!), or whatever. We end up finishing about 1 book a year, but I don't stress about it anymore. The only sub...

Re: Need some advice.....off topic question about Christmas

My daughter was 5 when she point blank asked me if he was real. I just told her the truth, but acted like she was now "in on the game." She was allowed to help set out her younger brother's "presents from Santa" and she has LOVED playing that role. We've never been openly deceptive about it, and I t...

Re: We started a new book today

My son said the same thing when we began Peter Cottontail a few weeks ago. He always begs for more than just one chapter each school day - which I don't allow, even though I really want to read ahead for myself. Mine are exactly the same way, and I won't read ahead either. But I did find some other...

That cracks me up! I'm the same way. I even cried when the new Ares rocket went up yesterday. I'm such a sap, and my kids think I'm crazy. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Re: LHFHG

Well, we are only on week 9, and we started last April. It was very freeing and empowering to start a new curriculum sometime other than August or September!!! Just finish the book, and start the new one then, whichever month it falls. There's no rule that you have to start and finish a book at a ce...

Re: Loving LHFHG!

I'm so glad you are having fun in your homeschool! We have had the same experience for LHFHG. I bought it last spring to use this fall, but after looking at it, we scrapped what we were doing and got started last spring. It was the best decision I ever made. School is SUPPOSED to be fun at this age!!

Re: Ds6 and reading trouble

It's more random "forgetting" of letters, and just not seeming to catch on and recognize words that he's read hundreds of times. This raised a red flag for me. My dd1 was very much like this. I'm curious is he really settled in to a handedness? Is He Ambidextrous? If your dc is mixed dominate aka.....

Re: Ds6 and reading trouble

Thank you for the encouragement everyone. I'm not having so much trouble with blending--he can do that ok (when he wants to). It's more random "forgetting" of letters, and just not seeming to catch on and recognize words that he's read hundreds of times. I know there is a shift from sounding out wor...
