Re: Am I concerned for nothing? R & S?
A friend of mine who has used R & S for years does not start her kids in grammar until third grade, and at that point does R & S English 3. We are doing Beyond for 2nd grade in the fall, and that is what I intend to do. I think the grammar in Beyond will be perfect for her next year, and then we wil...

Re: Combining and Kindergarten
How about doing LHFHG at half-speed? Since she already has her Math and LA, you could just do the first half of it for K, then the second half for 1st. I think this would work beautifully, as the first half is Ancient History (bible) and the second half is world/ mostly American history. Also, the r...

Re: bdget vs. thrilled w/ HOD
Just a couple of thoughts...
Combining storytime if you are using two guides.
Use readers that you already have for DITHOR (maybe books your older one has read, but not your younger.) This is one great advantage to HOD- the reading choices are flexible- YOU choose the books in each genre.

Re: Brand new, excited, questions!
I think Little Hearts for His Glory would be a great fit for your 6 year old. We are finishing it up for 1st grade, and it has been a great year. Your 4 year old will enjoy the actvities, rhymes, and music, etc. too! :D I would use the 1st grade handwriting option (A Reason for Handwriting), which w...

Re: New to Dakota and I have a LOAD of questions!
I think most of the posts that refer to help in planning and scheduling are regarding planning out which guide to use with which child and scheduling out your day. (which subjects to do when in the day). HOD really IS pretty much open and go!

Hi and welcome to HOD! Which 4 guides are you considering and what are the ages of your kids?

Re: How do you manage 2 programs at once?
The main reason I posted the link to the other thread was the response by Carrie as to how she makes her own schedule- breaking it down by Independent Work, Teacher-directed, etc. I found this so helpful and this is how we schedule our 2 programs.

Re: Using LHFHG again for 1st???
Are you almost finished with Little Hearts? If so, I would probably move on to Beyond if he places there on the placement chart. I think HOD says to place more emphasis on where they are on the "academic" (3 Rs) part of the placement chart. So if he is placing at Beyond for writing, reading, math, e...

Re: Need Advice For 2nd Grade Beyond!
Hi! Just thought I would add that a friend of mine has been using Rod and Staff for several years, and she does not do the R&S English 2, but waits until 3rd grade and then moves straight to R&S English 3. Rod and Staff English is spiral, so I can see how this would be easy to do. Hope this helps!

Re: More questions...Little Hearts or Beyond?
Yes, that is the same book. So that will give you an idea of what the history reading would be for the second half of Little Hearts. If he is already used to listening and understanding chapter books like Charlotte's Web, then Beyond might be a good fit for him, especially since he will be an older ...

Re: More questions...Little Hearts or Beyond?
Khara, how is his ability to listen to longer chapter books without any pictures? That is one difference between Little Hearts and Beyond. My oldest would have been just fine listening to the history and storytime books at 6, but with my 2nd dd (the one who is doing Little Hearts), the Burgess Books...

Re: More questions...Little Hearts or Beyond?
We did MFW K last year and then Little Hearts this year for 1st. Academically, she placed at Beyond also, but I felt like she needed an overview of history and what it is before we got into American History. I feel that Little Hearts was a great fit for her. We just did separate math and phonics/rea...

Re: Finally! A plan! :)
Just wanted to encourage you a little about doing multiple guides... I was nervous about this myself this year, doing two, but it has been just fine! In fact, I'll be doing three in the fall! :) Carrie has written the guides in a way that makes it very managable to do more than one guide. As they ge...

Re: New Intro
Erin, just wanted to say welcome! We are finishing our first year with HOD and it has been so great! I only wish I had been able to use it when my oldest was in K and we were just starting homeschooling. You will really enjoy it! Welcome to the board!
