2nd Grade: Should I switch math
Just a quick question. My 7 yr old son is finishing up Abekas 1st grade math. Since we're trying to switch over to HOD, I was wondering if I should switch his math to Singapore since that is what HOD recommends or stick with Abeka since he's comfortable with it. I've seen one sample page of Singapor...

Re: After The Reading Lesson
For my son (we use Abeka for reading due to the constant phonic review which are included in their emerging readers that really helps my son) even we are on "break", we never stop reading and phonics review. I figure it's just like anything else he wants to be good at, he must practice. However, so ...

Re: We need help.
Sorry, I just have to ask....Do your kids really wake up at 8:30??? If my boys ever slept that late, I'd first rush them to the E.R. because I'm sure they were deathly sick (lol) and second I could get everything done by that time...whoooohooooo!!!! My families all up by 6am and on Thursday mornings...

Re: BOB books?
Ooohhhhhhh, I completely forgot about BOB books. My 7 yr old used them in Kindergarten (his teacher didn't like Open Court and only preferred Bob books) and we absolutely loved them! I didn't realize that Bob had out ABC books, so I'll have to go get those. We bought our set of books (they come in a...

Re: Word Board
We're not using a formal phonics program....using Abeka but not in a formal way but between us working with him, speech and The Letter Factory, he's doing pretty well phonetically. However, we'll start to sing the ABC's and it's like we were asking him to do an Algebra problem. We also have an ABC b...

Word Board
I was just wondering if any of you keep up a word board in your "classrooms?" My 1st son went to ps Kindergarten and from the beginning his teacher had a word wall (actually covered the whole classroom by the end of the school year) with sight words. When the kids first entered the classroom (each m...

Re: 1st grade completed cursive
Thanks Misty! We really enjoyed Abekas 1st grade cursive. I no longer allow my son to print and his cursive is beautiful. The nice thing is he can now read our mail that is in cursive which makes him proud of himself. Did you find cheerful cursive different than Abekas program?

1st grade completed cursive
I've got a quick question in regards to cursive. My 7 yr old just completed Abekas 1st grade cursive program and has mastered the letter formation. We're getting ready to purchase all of our HOD curriculum for next year and I was wondering if we'll still need a cursive program? If not, do I just hav...

Re: How do you incorporate Holiday crafts and activities
Ohhhh crafts......I spend hours researching new crafts (don't like the same old stuff) so it can be a sore subject if I can't find the "right" thing. My boys are always looking for things to do, so we usually will spend an afternoon or weekends working on crafts. Just had to comment on St. Patricks ...

Re: Organizing HOD Work w/Workboxes
Oh thank you ladies for your input. The workbox conference is in a beautiful danish town called, Solvang (here in California) and any excuse to visit that town is a bonus! I really appreciate you both taking the time to post a reply!

Organizing HOD Work w/Workboxes
I read a lot of posts on a homeschool website where the women use, Sue Patricks, Workbox System to organize their homeschool. Do any of you ladies use it to organize your kids HOD work? Sue Patrick is coming to a town this Saturday, 2 hours away from me (beautiful town, so well worth the drive) to p...

We're Abeka users as well (my son just turned 7) and just from using Abeka and having the Beyond book as well, I personally would choose Bigger for my 7 yr old if your child did well with Abeka this year. I'm personally just basing my opinion in comparing the math and writing in Beyond compared to w...

Re: New to HOD- Beyond or Bigger???
I spent a lot of day going thru our Beyond book to see what I'll be using for next year (we primarily used Abeka this year). My son just turned 7 in December and the math and science were too simplistic for my son, especially the math. However, my son loves, loves, loves science and needs a lot more...

Re: Reading Made Easy vs. Abeka
I'm so thankful for you ladies and your homeschool experiences and support! RuthAnn, I, too, love your analogy of the gentle water! When I was looking for homeschool curriculum 2 years, I thought if it didn't look really challenging and "tough" my son would be behind. My son does fine with Abeka but...
