Re: Not sure what to do for next year.

I should have also added that we are adding in to each day a Bible study very simply (and cheaply!) with a Bible story book and Calvary Chapel coloring pages. If we have any new words (vocabulary for us) we write these on handwriting paper and glue them to the back of the coloring page for that less...

Re: Not sure what to do for next year.

Thanks, Mary. I'm having to grow to accept that my 8 y/o has the maturity of about a 6 y/o. He's a sweet little guy who loves the Lord, and that is what is most important above all. I am also having to accept that we probably won't "finish" the history rotation, but you know, my older kids never did...

Re: Native American study

Thanks for the book suggestion. I'm off to google it. I live near a large Choctow population, and so much of my state's history is involved with Native American past. There are Indian mounds all around us, and so many of our towns have names given to us by these people. I truly think that we need to...

Re: Combining children for ease rather than ability? Help!

I think you could easily "beef up" Beyond for the 7 y/o soon to be 8. I have posted my thoughts in another thread here: http://www.heartofdakota.com/board3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2990 I think this would maintain interest, add difficulty, and yet keep your kids together for awhile in order to maintain y...

Re: English History -suitable book????

I want to add this book in to our studies in a year or so too. I have been looking at it, but can surely tell it is a bit above our heads right now.

Re: Not sure what to do for next year.

This is how I'm "beefing up" Beyond for us to use right now. I'm adding in a Native American study with notebooking pages. I'm also adding in some of the Ambleside literature as evening read-alouds, and we're reading some fairy tales and Aesop, then discussing them. A few other things we'll do is ad...

Native American study

I'm wondering about adding in some kind of Native American study with our Amer. History studies. I feel that it is important to show how these people lived, and not just portray them as "savages" as some of the literature suggests. I think for an 8 y/o this would be an interesting add-in to our less...

Re: Placement question

I just thought of one more thing... I know the feeling of frustration and discouragement myself. Those are hard feelings to teach with. I know just know how difficult that can be, and I have chosen not to let those feelings take over my life and my day. God wants better for us, His children. Truly, ...

We love Cheerful Cursive!

I just wanted to give a shout out for Cheerful Cursive today. I've tried some freebie printables from the internet, but they just weren't getting the job done. I ordered Cheerful Cursive, not really having had a copy to look at---just really took a step of faith that Carrie had once again chosen som...

Re: Placement question

Hi TeacherMom! I homeschool an 8 y/o dgs, who has a few of the same issues as you have described. He most likely is a special needs child, and could be placed on medication if we pursue that direction for him. In the meantime though, we are using natural supplements with some success. Some days the ...

Re: Starting Beyond on Monday, question about storytime...

We read Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin by M. Henry for our biography reading for the first week of Beyond. My library just happened to have a copy, and it ended up being one of our favorite books so far! It did take us about the prescribed amount of time to finish it, as the chapters are a litt...

Re: Question about books for Preparing...

Thanks, Carrie! I am just trying to see what I already have, and what I will need when the time comes. I will have to get a table of contents for the CHOW to see how it lines up with what I have on hand.

Question about books for Preparing...

I am gathering the books I have on hand for Preparing to see what I'll need when the time comes. I already have on hand a book called The Story of Louis Pasteur ( a Signature Book), and also the complete set of Young People's Story of our Heritage , which states in the front cover that it was origin...

Re: Emerging Reader not happy....

I just wanted to add that we are reading Understood Betsy right now, and my little guy loves it! We started out very slowly, just reading about 3 pages or so. The first chapter was a little hard to get "into", but soon the story picks up and it's just great! The wording in the book and vocabulary ar...
