Re: Using R&S level 2 grammer with Beyond?
I'm doing Beyond with my 8yo ds, but substituting the LA and math from Bigger. (I went ahead and bought the BIgger guide, since I knew I'd be using it the next year.) It's been working really well for us. If we had just done Beyond's LA, it wouldn't have been enough for my ds. I love how HOD allows ...

Re: Speech Question
Can she make an R at all, or does she just leave it out of blends? My 3-almost 4yo dd sounds similar. Same errors, as well as leaving S out of blends and saying W for R and L. All "normal" errors for her age, but I am constantly translating for dh as well as strangers...I worked with her a bit on a...

Re: Speech Question
I think one reason Dr. recommend the evaluation when there is a concern not a problem. Because it can take 6 months to get your tax dollars to work for you. I had Early intervention in NY. It took forever to get in. 5 month wait for evaluation, then 2 months of pussy footing around, then we got ser...

Re: What to do with a dd that is lazy...?
Karen - just a few different thoughts that came to mind to add to this already well answered thread. It seems oldest dc want to be independent. I know my oldest does, and I know both of my sisters' oldest ds/dd do, and that was the way it was in our own family growing up with my oldest sis as well....

Speech Question
Any speech language pathologists out there, or parents of children who have received speech therapy? My 3yo dd (who will be 4 next week  ) just had her annual physical. I mentioned to the pediatrician that she has trouble with the r and th sounds, saying cown for crown and fing for thing and th...

Re: So I'm Skipping Stuff
I don't want to belabor the point, but for me, having a schedule is what allows me to get everything done. If I don't have a planned time to accomplish things, it's easy to skip them when things get hectic. I've done that in the past and didn't like how things were going. More times than I wished, I...

Re: So Discouraged
The first thought that comes to mind is that your current day will seem short to what it would be if you went back to teaching. From my experience as a public school teacher, not only would you have a similar or longer teaching schedule, but you'd have hours of paperwork, planning, correcting, meeti...

Re: Encouragement Needed...badly
I think dh just doesn't understand. He's a ps high school teacher and thinks schedules, time limits, homework, etc. are the answer. Some of that may be true, but with hs and all of the variables that go with it, it is sometimes hard to implement. I haven't read the other responses, but just wanted ...

Re: Storytime genre question
Hello, Not to be argumentative here! :) :) Carrie listed Anne of Gr. Gables as humor genre in the Bibliography Girls Interest storytime titles in the back of the CtC teacher's guide. Maybe it fits into both genre??! :) Choosing joy, Liz Yeah, it probably does! :) I think I remember Julie mentioning...

On the "Sample Book Ideas" list that HOD sells, it's listed under Historical Fiction.

Re: If you used Rod and Staff 1...
Our situation is very similar to yours. Last year, we did Rod and Staff Reading and Phonics for Grade 1, and this year we are doing Beyond. When my ds finished R&S 1, he was more than ready to begin the ERS, but I wanted him to finish R&S's phonics program, so even though he was testing at a 3rd/4th...

Re: Copywork Concern
I just had to share ... When my ds did his copywork today, I told him I would set the timer for 15 minutes and as long as he was diligent, whatever he completed was fine, as long as it was done well. I explained about the purpose of copywork and the importance of checking his work and being careful....

Re: Missionaries/Missions
I'm only in Beyond, so I can't speak of how the future HOD guides touch on missions, but what has worked for us has simply been occasionally to read missionary stories to our children. Sometimes my 8yo ds will read the stories on his own, sometimes we'll read them to him at bedtime and most recently...
