Re: If your student is in Preparing or CTC....

My 10yo DS (11 in March) is almost done with CTC (3 units left!), in Singapore 4B, dictation Level 5, R&S 4, and DITHR WB level 4/5, but books at a level 6. Keep in mind, though, that we have been doing HOD now for 4 years, so that does make a difference in their placement, IMO. Hope that helps a li...

Re: As we move into high school, the design of the guides...

Ladies, There are some truly excellent thoughts within these posts, which I will continue to ponder, but I'll also just pause at this point to reiterate that I can truly only pull-off writing one guide each year with one manual at this point in time. :D I was just telling my husband last night how ...

We are almost done with CTC with my 10.5 yo DS, in Unit 15 in Beyond with my second 7.5 yo DS, and slowly going through LHTH and The Reading Lesson with my just-turned 5 yo DD!!! Excited to start RTR with my first DS in January and LHFHG next year for K with my DD! :D :D :D

Re: History in Bigger is draaaaging...

What if you read the first half of the reading outloud to him and then let him read the rest of it outloud to you or to himself? Do you think that might help with his retention? My first DS is a visual learner, not an auditory one. So, while reading outloud and him being able to retain the informati...

Re: How do you present poetry copywork to your Beyond kids?

I photocopy each poem and have him do his copywork on looseleaf notebook paper. We also follow the poetry guidelines in Beyond, which includes cutting out the poem like a puzzle, putting it back together, then he glues it to another piece of paper and illustrates the poem. HTH!!! :D

Re: Roll Call - When are you all starting?

Today was our first day!!! We all enjoyed ourselves. Our special day was planned as follows: 1. Going to Panera for breakfast. 2. Taking photos with these back to school signs. 3. Talk about why we love homeschooling. 4. Do a first day of school booklet . Probably take us more than one day for sure...

Re: Roll Call - When are you all starting?

We started last Thursday...at half-speed. Tomorrow will be our first full day doing CTC, BLHFHG, and LHTH! :D This year, one of the things we did to celebrate was to have a treasure hunt! I hid post-it notes all over upstairs (our school room is up there), with each one giving a clue of where to fin...

Re: Spelling help?

Thanks, Julie! :D Yes, we have been following the HOD guidelines in Beyond for spelling the whole time so far. I like the idea of correcting words any time he spells them wrong, no matter what/when he is writing.

Thanks again for the encouragement! :D

Spelling help?

Hi everyone! My second DS (7 yo, starting 2nd grade) is struggling with spelling. He seems to really be struggling with sight words, such as when, what, are, said, etc. Any ideas of how to cement these for him this year? We have gone about halfway through List 1 spelling words in Beyond, and he has ...

Re: Question about Beyond

I had my DS copy 1 line at the beginning of the year last year and moved into 2 lines by the end of the year (per day). I do NOT have him copy the whole poem, unless it is a short one! I agree that it shouldn't take more than 5-10 min. or they will become tired/frustrated. I do make a copy of each p...

Re: The dawdling, distracted child....and the frustrated mam

I wholeheartedly agree with many of the pp...a huge part of CTC is solidifying the student's independent learning skills, writing skills, and their ability to follow through on each task. Maybe with the writing you could start slowly with her until she is writing or typing the full 5-8 sentence narr...
