Re: What a difference a week makes!

Thank you for sharing! Such a great reminder. I especially love the image of cheering for our kids even when they only take 2 or 3 steps. My kids just glow when I praise them for what they are doing well and have a much harder time when I am down on them for something I think they should be better a...

Yay1 We did it! We finished LHFHG and are ready to move on to Beyond! :D

New books from HOD came today. We will start up next week after our out of state family is done visiting.

Re: Any others starting school soon?

We are still plugging away at finishing LHFHG! It will have taken us just over a year to complete it. We are finishing up unit 31 today. Then only 3 more units to go! I'm sticking to MelinKansas's advice not to skip things, even though my urge is to get it done asap so we can start Beyond as the new...

Re: Ladies I am totally overwhelmed

Kim, I am praying for you too. You have been given wonderful practical advice already, so I won't burden you with more ideas. I just wanted to say I identify with hormonal craziness as I am just completing my second miscarriage since spring. Add grief and caring for small children to my mix, and you...

Re: History for Little Pilgrims question

We skipped it as well. I have two in LHFHG (just finishing up!) and my youngest, (5-6yo this past school year) has a had a harder time narrating (although getting a tiny bit better at the end of the year) and the extra work would have been too much for her. I try to save the narrating for the storyt...

Re: How much reading is too much for my emerging reader?

Two sessions has been working well. He reads to me during the day and to dad at night when it works out. I now have him read one or two stories from the beginners bible, then he reads from the abeka reader we were given. Wish I had the supplemental titles listed in the guide. Still probably not enou...

Re: How much reading is too much for my emerging reader?

Daneale, That is just what I was wondering...if I pushed him to read more would he hate reading eventually. I never thought of incentives. I will have to think that one over! Yesterday we did two sessions and the first I required him to read an extra story. He did it just fine. Maybe we will work up...

Re: How much reading is too much for my emerging reader?

I have looked for the supplemental titles in the library and haven't found them yet. I have picked up a few different ones and he loves to read them. A friend also gifted us with her old abeka readers and he also loves reading those. Maybe I will do two reading sessions with him and add an extra boo...

How much reading is too much for my emerging reader?

Hello... One question to run by all of you. My 8yo is reading the emerging readers list now. He is about 2/3 thru The Beginners Bible. He reads about one or two stories and then is done. This takes less than 10 min. I am concerned that he is technically entering 3rd grade and not more advanced with ...

Lewis and Clark rock!

We had so much fun today learning about Lewis and Clark and making the paper bag vests. We read "How We Crossed the West" by Rosalyn Schanzer and it was a big hit. We'll finish it tomorrow. Thought I would share this picture of my kids enjoying the art project!

Re: finishing LHFHG

Thank you, Melissa. He has enjoyed the pace of this year. The slightly lighter pace in LHFHG has helped to take away the stress of learning something new and hard at his level (like subtraction!). I think if I put him into a higher guide he would hate school. :) I think I need to take a small week l...

Re: finishing LHFHG

Thank you ladies. My kids are each doing the HOD recommended resources for math and reading at their own level, but not according to the unit we are on. My son is older so he is working on Emerging Readers and my daughter is in TRL. Everyday we keep working on our three R's, but not following the ex...

finishing LHFHG

Hello everyone... My kids, son (just turned 8) and daughter (just turned 6), and i are trying to finish up LHFHG this summer. We are currently on unit 28. I have good intentions on finishing, but am feeling my spirits lagging behind. (Could be the pregnancy fatigue...) We started mid way in August l...

Re: Spelling Help

Lisa, I would also add, as a recovered curriculum hopper, the spelling lists in beyond/bigger are deceivingly plain. At first glance I wasn't sure they would be enough "pizzazz" either, but after trying it with both my kiddos just as written, it is one of their favorite parts of the day. I am glad I...
