Re: Singapore Math

Hello, I thought I would post since math has been our hardest area. I also started my oldest son in Right start math which did not work for us. We switched to Singapore next. It has been good but a huge learning curve for me. I am surrounded by MUS people, so the emphasis of mastery over spiral is a...

Re: habit of attention

Thank you MelinKansas, that is super helpful. I will keep plugging away with her and not be discouraged about her narration skills yet! And thank you, mamanlait, for the reminder to not make school drudgery in these early years. I suppose the more experience I get teaching, the more perspective I wi...

Re: discouraged, would love some prayer and advice

Julie, Thank you for your replies! We are chugging along with many more good moments than bad moments. This is usual for us, so I am glad to have things back to "normal". Standing in the corner has worked beautifully. I've only had to use it once so far for each of my older kids. When I remind them ...

Re: discouraged, would love some prayer and advice

Hello again! Thank you all for your wonderful replies. Just yesterday my oldest had a terrible attitude day. I suppose the good side is that he has a high sense of justice and is not afraid to speak up (loudly) for what he believes is right. Someday, God will use that, but obviously I need to ...

Re: habit of attention

Just coming back to check this post. Thank you, Julie, for your input! We have work to do in this area of attention. My oldest is so good at narrating. He can remember every minute detail of my readings, sometimes weeks later! My younger daughter (6) has a much harder time paying attention. I haven'...

Re: discouraged, would love some prayer and advice

Thank you ladies! I am reading and rereading your posts to soak in the wisdom. I will be praying and processing what is written here. I will update after some more prayer and thought. Thank you for taking time to respond.

discouraged, would love some prayer and advice

Hello HOD family! We have had a rough go of it this week trying to start back up after Christmas break. It doesn't help that my morning sickness is so tiring. The particular areas I am discouraged in are 1) scheduling and 2) my oldest ds's attitude 1) I have been rereading a great book on sche...

Re: General Homeschooling- need help/ prayer

Praying for Becky and Nealewill. Praying from my brokenness. It has been a struggle for me too, recently. May we follow God's Spirit and not just what we THINK He wants. He's pretty unpredictable sometimes!

Re: Hit a wall with combining?

Thank you! After praying and waiting on God about uncombining, He seems to have directed us to keep combined for now. I've decided to take Stephanie's advice and start doing separate storytimes. With some new strategies for keeping the kids' attentions focused, they are able to work hard together in...

Re: habit of attention

Thank you, mamanlait and nealewill! I needed that reminder that they are still very young, and to make sure I am not pushing too hard. So far she has enjoyed, "A Lion to Guard Us", and most recently "Sarah Witcher's Story". My ds loves every story we read. My dd had a hard time paying attention to t...

Re: habit of attention

Thank you ladies...

Would you mind sharing your alternative consequences with me? It helps me to make everything as practical as possible. :) I know every kid is different. Thanks!

Re: habit of attention

Thank you, Motherjoy! I own "Laying down the rails" and have enjoyed it. I find I need more practical examples to help me, so requiring eye contact and the child to repeat the instruction is good, helpful advice. What I find tricky is if my daughter doesn't pay attention to the story, she seems to c...

Re: Hit a wall with combining?

I like your idea, Stephanie, of having your older start Preparing and younger wait to start it half speed until DITHOR and the 3 R's are going well. Part of me would like to jump my older son up just because I fear he is "behind". Bigger would probably be a challenge for him, but he could place ther...

Re: Hit a wall with combining?

Thank you , Stephanie and Nealewill. Nealewill, do you mean to bump him up to Bigger right away (without finishing Beyond) and go half speed? Both kids are currently in Beyond (unit 10). Should I wait until he finishes the spelling list one before bumping him up? (he is on unit 20 of spelling list o...

Re: Hit a wall with combining?

Thank you, Nealewill! He would do fine in Bigger, I think. Unfortunately, I started him late with spelling, so he is only on unit 20 of the first spelling list. I definitely felt that he needed to start with list one since he had no prior spelling. I don't know if I should wait to bump him up to Big...
