Re: A thought on beefing up guides for HS

The difference for me and why I ultimately chose to put dd into WG this last year instead of beefing up Rev2Rev with her sister was that high school is about credits needed to graduate. The content would not have been a problem for history and Bible (it was definitely high school worthy). The proble...

Re: Your thoughts on Algebra. 8th grade or 9th grade?

I intended using Math 8/7 or Algebra 1/2 and not both. You're right on that one. We are in lesson 47 of Saxon 7/6 though. I could take the placement test and see how he does placing in 8/7 next year. My son is resistant doing math over the summer, too. The review I was talking about, it's a fundame...

Re: Your thoughts on Algebra. 8th grade or 9th grade?

I have heard that Saxon 8/7 and Pre-Algebra 1/2 are almost the same. If you do 8/7, you go to Algebra 1 not Pre-Algebra 1/2. 8/7- The final Saxon middle school level, previously learned skills are reviewed, while new concepts such as pre-algebra, ratios, probability and statistics are introduced. Al...

Re: Trying to decide if I should separate my kids this year

While I think it is great to keep kids together, I also think high school is a different ball game. I had always combined my dd's together when we did HOD prior and I really thought about it this year. However, the more I thought about beefing up and adding to things for Economics and Government and...

Is it the reading in DITHOR or the workbook in DITHOR that concerns you the most?

Re: Contemplating switching to Singapore, but uncertain...

I definitely say do the placement test. ds11 went back to Singapore this year and he placed 3a-ish. He could have went into 3b but wasn't really strong in the placement test on 3a. So our goal is to get him through 6a/6b and then go into Algebra 1.

Re: Contemplating switching to Singapore, but uncertain...

We haven't switched into Singapore this late, but we have previously used Teaching Textbooks. It is a great math program if you want hands off and minimal fuss, but I personally feel it is behind in concepts and understanding achieved by a student. I wouldn't base everything on a standardized test, ...

Re: HOD and testing

This is a great thread. My ds11 has dyslexia/dysgraphia and I am very proud of his scores this year as they show continued improvement. He was finishing 5th grade and has used HOD's LHFHG, BLHFHG, BHFHG, K12's 4th grade and 1/2 of 5th, and just came back to HOD's Preparing to finish 5th. We used the...

Re: RevtoRev Extension package

We are not using the Physical Science from Rev2Rev. We had the opportunity for in-class labs with our co-op using a different Physical Science. The advanced curriculum is supposed to be eligible of a high school credit though. :)

Re: Can read ER books, but needs more phonics

My ds that has dyslexia/dysgraphia had vision issues as well. When we bought those colored overlays that would highlight one line of print at a time, we had a reading breakthrough. It really helped him and it was inexpensive. A few dollars for an overlay from the School Aid store. I would like to en...

Re: Science in High School

OK. Here are my thoughts. For the science in MTMM, I would count as these credits: Concepts of Chemistry 1/2 credit Natural Science-The Story of Origins 1/2 credit (Masterbooks uses Grand Experiment in 12th grade and this is the title they give for the course and credit that they award) For WG scien...

Re: RevtoRev Extension package

We will be doing the same thing with our current 8th grader. She will do Rev2Rev for 8th and move to WG for 9th. We are not doing the extensions. We are doing Algebra 1, Physical Science, and German for high school credit instead.

Re: Can read ER books, but needs more phonics

Does your child's current school test for reading issues or just place them in resource? I ask b/c here it is commonplace to not test for dyslexia or other similar issues until 4th grade or 9 yrs old even if the child shows signs of it. How is your student's spelling? Does your child struggle with w...

Re: Reading Troubles

Here are my thoughts on learning to read. If you can instill a love of reading early, then you are way ahead of the game when it comes to school for the rest of the school career. If you instill a dread of reading, you will fight an uphill battle the rest of the school career. It is summer. I would ...

Re: Dictionary for Bigger

We have the American Heritage Children's Dictionary as well as the student dictionary. We just pull out the student one if the children's doesn't have what we need, but I am thinking that hasn't happened too often. We start with the children's dictionary and shift to the student's around CTC. Of cou...
