Re: Independent Reading in Preparing
I'm guessing that would be too much to ask, at first. Maybe you could ease into it?

Re: IF you plan to HS through high school...
Secretly, yes, I thought I would. I always told everyone it was "year by year." (ETA to clarify--I wasn't sure my dh, with the final say, was on board). One day, my husband, who is a public middle school principal, told me he thought I should continue homeschooling our daughter through high school. ...

Re: Questions About Beefing Up Beyond
We used R&S 2 with Beyond. I believe we did 4 lessons per week. The Bigger manual merely schedules it, and you aren't missing anything by not having it. It is the same for the Cursive book. The one area you may miss by not having the Bigger manual is the dictation for spelling. At the risk at statin...

Re: Help me not give up! NOT doing well
I want to encourage you to not give up. This isn't a homeschooling issue. It is a parenting issue. So, sending them off to school will just give you relief (maybe) and put the children in an environment that will encourage their disrespect at home. Not only that, you will be spending more time in th...

Re: PHFHG alternative to Heaven's Heroes?
We read that book and also a couple of the other books in Sonlight's K. I'm just planning on reading them again. For us, I'm sure my now rising 5th grader will get more out of them than the first go-around in 1st grade. Looking through Preparing's guide, I understand what Carrie is saying. It will g...

Re: What, exactly, are extensions?
The extensions include oral and written narration assignments. Most of the extension books are at a higher reading level and more appropriate for that higher age range. We've found, with Bigger, how well they add additional depth to the history studies. That level has an extension book or two that c...

Re: Chronicles of Narnia?
We used "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" as the fantasy selection for our story-time in Bigger. I have the rest of the books and am wondering if I should just have my daughter read them or actually include them in our studies. My ds18 read them all in 2nd/3rd grades. At that time he was in a ...

Yes, absolutely. My dd used it starting in 3rd grade when she was 8-1/2yo. Look at the next few guides to follow. There are some meaty history spines ahead.glperky wrote:Even though when we start he would be in the middle age range for Bigger?lucsch wrote:At that age, I'd go with Beyond.

Re: New Math Recommendation: World Geography Guide
Carrie, Thank you for answering my question and telling me about your son. In PS they do Algebra 1, Geometry, and then Algebra II with some reviewing of Algebra I. I wanted to do Algebra I, Algebra II and then Geometry because he wouldn't forget Algebra I if he had both algebras together. Then I wa...

Re: Heart of Dakota curriculum & homeschooling one child
We just finished Bigger and have used HOD for three years. It most definitely works well with an only!
As others have suggested, start with the placement chart.

I think you could start a 4th grader in R&S 3, skipping R&S 2.
