Do you stop after an hour no matter where you are? If so, do you try again later or the next day just pick up where you left off?
Yes, I do stop when the timer goes off and we pick up where we left off! :D :D The next child is usually ready for me, so that helps!

Re: We got an early start.......

Aren't you suppose to use index cards for the spelling? I was thinking about laminating some? Then they could be used over and over... or is there a reason to keep them? Last year Staples had them on sale for 1cent...! During their school supply sale... would be a good place to stock up if they hav...

Re: We got an early start.......

Hi, I noticed you use a timer for math lessons. How much time do you set for your daughter at that age? Are there any other subjects you've found a timer useful for? Thanks, Shannon, (thinking this might be a good strategy ) I actually use a timer for each teaching session I do with the kids. ...

Re: Emerging Reader

I am not familiar with Horizon's, but I did ABeka with my oldest ds and about halfway through the first grade year of ABeka, he was ready for ER. :D One of my dear friends noticed the same with a couple her sons who did ABeka. I found that they had covered enough phonics and reading comprehension fo...

Re: Discouragement with getting to higher levels

Lora Beth, thank you for bringing this up! :D Carrie, Thank you for your input. We made it to unit 12 in CTC, before summer break and I hope and pray that these life skills will begin to take root in my 10 year old this coming year as well. He can be very easily distracted, and gets a bit discourage...

Re: End of guide certificate?

We have done certificates for the younger grades, but the kids really love having a special Family Fun Night, where the graduate chooses what they want to eat that evening, dessert included  and what games we play as a family! 8) :D For finishing other small books we go get an ice cream con...

Re: Placement suggestions and BHFHG

DITHOR is indeed an excellent reading program that is literature based. The recommendation is to stay at the student grade level for the books you pick, because you are actually teaching your child to analyze and comprehend what they are reading. Your son going into 3 rd grade would be best to start...

Re: Bigger Hearts - half or full speed

I agree, that HOD is better used with the age range and the placement chart to see the skill of the individual child. Going half pace is a great recommendation as you mentioned that your dc was not a fan of copy work. The writing requirements are much more intense. We finished Beyond and moved ahead...

Re: Looking for some encouragement

I agree with pp. In your current situation, it would be best to keep things as basic as possible with your K-5 child. That way he knows what to expect daily and does not feel like he is getting the short end of the deal. Part of his lack of interest might come, because he might need consistency :D :...

We had the Nina and the Pinta ships docked at a Marina nearby and went on a field trip today! My ds was very excited to be able to answer, where Columbus was born and he quickly said: "Genoa, Italy"and he remembered that he finally got money from Queen Isabella :D :D :D I was excited that this secon...

My ds 7, a bit more on the sensitive side, enjoyed: Sword in the Tree-Adv, :!: Trumpet of the Swan-Fantasy. :!: ( not so much my fav. Don't care for many books in this genre myself) Squanto-Biography, Castleberry farm- Mystery :!: (Carrie has Footprints in the Barn listed. They have excellent charac...
