Re: Question / need help / advice
Just popping in for a minute here... But my children *in general* do not have much of a "say" in what they do or do not do- especially when it comes to school. You have to be the one to "call" the shots - in so many words. That said- I have not had much trouble with my children and their learning. W...

Re: Let's share our schedules!
Ladies, Thank you all so much for your kind words! And water2wine, your advice is great, too! I just wanted to add my little disclaimer- that I am not a superwoman! :o I am not "high energy" in the mornings- and tend to be more relaxed- especially on a Monday! But that is what I loved about ...

Re: English for struggling reader
Dear Paige, I am sure that many moms/ladies who have much more educational expertise than I will join in here- but I care about your posts so I wanted to reply to you! :D Is your son having trouble with phonics? I know that some might say to really focus on getting him reading- assuring you that he ...

The targeted listener(s) cozy up on the couch. The others do whatever they are supposed to or mill around, make noise, and are hushed! 8) Older non-targeted listeners can join in if they are not supposed to be doing something else (like playing with the two year old) as long as they are quiet and si...

3ringcircus- the son that I was asking about will be six! Thanks! Paige, my two and four year old LOVE Boz the Green Bear dvd's. The content is great and spiritually nurturing. All my kids love the Christmas Boz movie, too. (I like it too! ) We also like Praise Baby for little ones and most o...

Re: Where should my friend move to?
No one has mentioned North Carolina. North Carolina has a wonderful home school law. The downside of this is that some people do not take their school seriously. This can lead to lack of support if you are looking for it in some places- I have found. I can't speak for support groups, activities,etc....

Re: Let's share our schedules!
Carrie- you are so very helpful! Thank you! :) The biggest thing that helped me was scheduling Bigger's history readings for the morning! Seeing your schedule really helped me understand what was designed to be "more independent" and what wasn't... really helped! Also- keeping the children "moving" ...

Re: Week In Review 10-30-08
I love the community that HOD offers through this message board! :D We had a great week of school. We began unit five in Bigger... and I think it is all falling into place... so I think Julie's is right about that fifth week... it is NOT our fifth week... but it is unit five.... I also tweaked my sc...

Re: Let's share our schedules!
I tweaked our schedule based on Carrie's! Suddenly- voila, I am able to get all of Bigger... done in a day! Yay!
So, I have made a new schedule out. I am going to give it a full blown "go" on Monday. I will post it if it is indeed- success!
Thank you so much for this thread!

Re: Has anyone tried a different math & english schedule?
This is actually what we are doing this year with my son who is in Bigger. He is using Rod and Staff 3 and SM 2A right now. He needs all my attention and help with math. He is doing much better- remembering concepts, everything by giving focused attention every other day. We do one whole exercise on...

HOD "student" declares...
Today I remarked to my eight year old about how much I was enjoying our school... as I cast a happy glance toward my pile of manuals. I had DITHOR, Little Hearts, Beyond, and Bigger on my kitchen counter in a stack. Yes, I use them all! :o He replied and said," Yeah! I want to use HOD for all my yea...
