Re: Preparing for College with HOD

I think the guides BEFORE Carrie's high school guides are better education than I received! I've thought this for years! :D Annaz, I agree with you I so wish that there was a Scope & Sequence or list of sorts outside of or included in the placement chart, because these types of skills are what Mom'...

Re: Preparing for College with HOD

Lynn, Really?? That is great news! I'm going to go pull out my WG guide and take a look at that now!!!!! It's so important to have a place to ask questions and get informed answers. Thank you! Edited: Following up: I found what you were talking about, Lynn (the projects are toward the end of the gui...

Re: Preparing for College with HOD

Awesome question, kamad! We are excited (and scared) about homeschooling through high school and have lots of questions as well. I'll tag on and ask if there are long-term projects assigned. I'd love to see that in the future high school guides, if not. It might be nice to have a history paper or li...

Re: List benefits of using HOD in High School

Love this post! 1. Rigorous: very academic husband approves the rigor of HOD High School. He is so pleased with what dd is reading, writing, synthesizing, and discussing. HOD always schedules in parent involvement and that helps me to maintain relationship with my growing teen. I truly believe discu...

Re: WG Science

Younger dd was older dd's Lab Partner in Lab #1. They both did the experiment separately and enjoyed it equally. I made the notes since it required a stop watch and recording person. Second Lab was less physical but dh served as the lab partner. I think it's wonderful when other kids or siblings joi...

Re: Reminded again today why I love HOD so much

We are just finishing Unit 2 of WG and still transitioning into High School with its extra demands. I'm completely amazed at how well the geography reading and notebooking is aligned. So much more is pulled out of the reading than I had pictured...it's just plain awesome how well this guide is writt...

Re: WG Science

My dd has JUST begun Algebra. We did the first experiment this week and was able to do the calculations just fine. It was more of plug and chug with the given formula. She thought it was straight forward. The math itself was just plugging in numbers into a fraction to determine rate. Rate = Time/Dis...

Re: Prereading for CTC on up?

I know many homeschoolers who read alongside their children or read to their children to 'redeem their own education'. I am one of them! I have learned so much by reading HOD books and grown in Christ and knowledge through this process. I feel very blessed to be a homeschooler for this very reason!

Re: High School Guides written in order?

This response is very helpful. It is difficult to tell by the reading list if there is a significant increase in difficulty.

Re: Home Economics in High School?

Thank you for your response! I have thoroughly appreciated the inclusion of recipes in the HOD guides over the years!! I'm not sure my oldest daughter would have ever learned to cook had she not had those activities scheduled into her day! :D There are some kids that just pick up Home Ec skills intu...

High School Guides written in order?

Are the High School guides written like the middle guides where there is a progression of skills? If so, are the skill jumps pretty big? For example, if a state doesn't require World Geography, could a 9th grader start with World History (jumping in from MMtM)? Or, could a child move to the World Hi...

Home Economics in High School?

I have tried to search this on the Boards but maybe someone remembers if HOD has plans to include Home Ec. as an elective during High School. I'd like to add it but would prefer to wait if it will be scheduled.

Thanks!

Re: which math to get next?

Nealewill, I just wanted to tell you that we have used Videotext for one semester now and REALLY like it! We did a month of Foerster's and a month of Videotext (more for my indecisiveness!) before making the decision. Though they are very different, I actually liked them BOTH very much! My dd ultima...

Re: Slow math- lesson or time limit?

I've had two different-abled kids go through Singapore 3a (at different times) but I've always tried to keep to the HOD schedule even if that meant breaking up the math lesson 20 min first thing and 20 min after other work was done. I also think that if your child knows that the lesson needs to be f...
