Re: 5 YO Hates to Cut and Color

So now I have my third who is more on the average, or perhaps normal is a better word, side. This is just a big change for me since my daughter was on the advanced side too. I think that's got to be the hardest part. My homeschooling journey was the opposite - two who seemed normal/average, but whe...

Re: 5 YO Hates to Cut and Color

My third, also a farm boy, hated coloring and drawing, too! I didn't do anything formal with him till 1st. By then he knew how to read. (How he learned will always be a mystery, lol.) We did cursive when he was in first (before officially learning manuscript, though he'd picked up most letters by th...

Re: CTC - Written Narrations

I agree with Stephanie to show her some in some way that it is the same as theboral narrations she's already done for years (in history, science and storytime). Whether just explaining that, or rwriting down an oral narration so she can see it (which is likely to be way longer than a written narrati...

Re: Little hearts Science & other ?s

One thing I have done with my kids is give them the option of doing the activity or narrating. That gave them some control over things while still doing a follow-up. And the rhyme we normally just read as a poem. My kids have never been huge fans of hand motions, etc, so they weren't a hit that way...

Re: Little hearts Science & other ?s

Never fear. HOD guides ramp up in difficulty to meet the needs of these fast-growing little ones. It's fine if some things are too easy as you approach the end of each guide. As long as the History and Storytime meet your child's needs, you can be confident that the increasing expectations will chal...

The sample pics show samples from both packages, so, no, you won't end up with 2 of the same. :)

Re: Finding our roots

If you search the Message Board there is lots of discussion about it, but here is Carrie's explanation of the change: "The new edition of Genesis: Finding Our Roots did not retain the beauty, formatting, or layout of the original edition. This new format made the new edition an even more difficult r...

Re: Finding our roots

If you mean Ruth Beechick's Genesis: Finding our Roots, then definitely history. Chronology, Biblical culture, etc. It's fabulous.

But be sure it's copyrighted pre-2018, as they changed the formatting and Carrie chose to discontinue providing it (and moved to the Radical Book).

Re: Notebooking Pages: plans to print in NON high-gloss paper?

I would definitely be interested in seeing what those look like!

I think they might be surprised how many people would take that option if they knew it was available!

Re: Please help with placement

When you combine an HOD, you want to place the youngest where they belong and then add the oldest if it works, but sometimes it works the other way around, when dealing with challenges. (I had a younger son a guide ahead of 2 older siblings for all of high school.) So that means my recommenda...

Re: Accuracy of American history, how books were chosen

At least for the high school guides, there are Sneak Peek posts where Carrie has discussed her choices for each subject. I don't know how low those go (I don't know if she did this for the middle school guides), but they offer lots of insights into her choices. You can also do searches about some of...

Re: Little hearts- storytime

I think this is going much better! it was difficult to get used to all the characters without much introduction to them, but I am so glad we kept going. She doesn’t love it yet by any means but I can tell she is starting to follow the story much better and tolerate it. I am liking it a lot more. We...

Re: Little hearts- storytime

Some do say it is harder, but I wonder if it is simply the nature of it being the first. Has your child listened to other books with more complex, "older" English syntax (word choice and order) before? Have you mostly read children's books to her or has she heard books read aloud to an older sibling...

Re: CTC- what in the world

My kids don't particularly like the CDs at first, but I think that learning to pull details out of a lecture is a valuable skill. If they're "lost" then rather than asking them to narrate (way too challenging), I ask them to listen till they hear something new that they'd never heard before, or some...

Re: Creation to christ- birds of the air/plant life

To share specifics of what is scheduled in the guide would violate copyright. However you can sometimes find online the table of contents. If you could find it for the edition HOD uses, it would be simple to figure out which chapters (or parts thereof?) are scheduled each day. I have tried using a K...
