Re: Preparing science- the "Key Idea" gives away the answer.

Hmmm....good point. I am currently making copies of the TM and putting them in a binder for my son's to do independently. I just highlight the boxes which I want them to do for that day. It might be good if I black out the key idea on theirs, but of course, can still see it in my book. Thanks for th...

Re: A couple of DITHOR questions

My sons are in two different levels, and I just spend time with them each separately letting them read and discussing the DITHOR lesson. It's pretty simple to do, actually, with just the one teacher's manual. I just put little post its with their name on them if they get on separate pages. I guess i...

Re: Beyond for a 9 yr old?

Yes, science was a little light. We actually added Rod and Staff 4 last year for my oldest son. It seemed to work well for him, although a bit DRY imo! :) :)

Re: Beyond for a 9 yr old?

My 10 year old did Beyond last year when he was 9 with DITHOR and 3rd grade math and LA. It was great for him! He is not the super academic type, whatever that really is, and it was his first year back to homeschooling after being in Christian school for 2 years. But this year he is thriving with Bi...

Re: How do you do the storytime in your guides?

I do them individually, but my youngest is usually around for the Bigger Storytime as well. So she hears them both!

A Quick Praise for HOD!

Just a quick praise and testimony! My son, who is 10 and who did NOT enjoy reading prior to HOD/DITHOR, now is currently reading in Bigger daily: Little Pilgrim's Progress (DITHOR), Ben and Me (extension), John Audobon, and his History selections independently daily PLUS about 10-12 books he checks ...

Re: Just had to share my joy.

That is precious, Laura. Thank you so much for sharing! Your son sounds like a delight, and he is learning the TRUE meaning of education -- knowing God. Bless you!

BTW, I feel the same. Thank you to all the HOD staff for such a God-honoring and Kingdom-minded curriculum.

Re: Student Led Learning Philosophy

Thank you for this post! I have been thinking of getting my sons a planner and having them write down their assignments each day in it themselves. What I have been doing this year is writing all of their list of assignments on a small white board that is on the wall. Then as they do the assignments,...

Re: Review of learned material question

What I do with my daughter is just try to review our Bible lesson and storytime portion from the day before and ask her to recall it and retell me the story. I just find that this recall works well to help cement it in the brain more. I do this with my sons as well and am amazed at how much it helps...

Re: It's me again - LHFHG

Wow, I praise God for His divine insight. Your daughter sounds so much like my son. He just shudders thinking about going to school now. He told me a few weeks ago that when he was in school, he used to "shiver" as he put it, and his stomach would hurt, and he would say in his mind, "I wish I was wi...

Re: How do you do the storytime in your guides?

I have done it at different times, breakfast, lunch and bedtime. I think what will work best for us is breakfast. I am going to try that tomorrow morning. I plan to start with Bible, then listen / sing our hymn, then read the Storytime to start the day. We shall see how it goes! I wasn't always gett...

Often the smartest children can be the most strong willed! :D :D If she is already reading and doing work like this at 5, she is exceptional in my opinion! Whew! Does she ENJOY doing lessons? That will make a big difference in her attitude as well. The attachment she has with you and her father will...

Re: Back to Rod and Staff :)

This year we switched to BJU Press for English/Grammar, and honestly, my sons do like it better, BUT, I personally am missing the Rod and Staff for the simplicity of use it is on the teacher! :( :( :( My sons just really like the color pages and the pictures/layout better, plus they do all their wor...

Re: Placement Q for 11 yr old coming out of Beyond

My DS will be 11 in February, and he and his 8 year old brother do Bigger, but they do it fairly independently. If you wanted to try, you could have your 10 year old do his science/history independently with extensions to see if that would be good for him. My thoughts are that you could try this rou...
