Re: HS science??

I have only used, thus far, the LOF Pre-Algebra with Biology - for my dd who is entering 9th this year and the experience was awesome. My dd hates math although she can do perform the math skills very well. She loves the independence and self-instruction. I know many complain that their kids look ah...

Re: HS science??

I did a little "snooping" on line and found that the pre-requisite for Apologia's Chemistry (not the advanced course) is Algebra 1 - nothing more. You need Algebra 2 for the next Chemistry course they offer. Okay, that said, when you wrote that your ds was going to have to re-take algebra this year,...

Re: HS science??

Total out on a limb here but --- if you were thinking about Chemistry and wanted to do the Rainbow Spectrum Chemistry, they offer a Bridge Math program that is just 7 weeks (summer) to prepare for the math needed in Chemistry. This would keep your child on track - you could start the math and when f...

Re: HS science??

I'll go out on a limb here and make a totally different suggestion - you could use what is already scheduled in RTR and add some supplements and the course would be titled "Earth Science" and you can easily add more to the assigned labs. Hands of a Child offers an 9-12 grade lapbook/research guide f...

Re: 3 HOD Program at once? Am I crazy?

Well, that gives me some support for sure in handling that much! ha ha! I would like for my ds who is in 5th to be more independent, he's still on the cusp. He was a late reader (starting finally independent reading this year) so I'll have to give some thought - especially on the science. We did do ...

3 HOD Program at once? Am I crazy?

Long story short (I tend to tell looooonnnnggg stories): My upcoming 9th grade dd is going to work through RTR, mostly on her own (but I've learned with high schoolers that you never just assume and leave them all alone, kwim?) which is great and do-able. I was then considering my ds (5th grader) wo...

Re: Anyone using RTR for High School?

Thanks so much for the feedback and I look forward to more ideas as time goes by. My dd is actually trying out the first week of lessons - can't do everything because of the notebooking pages and some of the books I don't have but I went ahead and purchased Forbidden Gates and the other history read...

Re: Anyone using RTR for High School?

Just wanted to add that I remembered in my favorites list that I had a link to a company that WP used for their Rock study that was called Ring of Fire (or something like that). They offer semester courses up through Grade 12 and they have one for space and weather and earth sciences - this would be...

Re: Anyone using RTR for High School?

I'll have to look at the Signs and Seasons book although I have Amanda Bennett's unit study for Astronomy and the advanced lapbook book Hands of a Child that is geared for high school that requires advance research so I think we'd be covered. I just recently read some stuff on high school sciences a...

Anyone using RTR for High School?

I'm seriously considering using the RTR for High School - at least for a history and 1/2 of an English credit. My dd is entering 9th grade and really likes the hands-on aspect of a program and wants to work independently and not have to wait for my time with her. I have 3 other kids who are all over...

Re: Do your dc want to participate in siblings' activities?

When we did Beyond, my youngest was 4 and he was definitely right there, watching, assisting, participating and learning with his older brother. You can go back on the weekly reports and see pictures of the two of them and it was the best time they had together - their relationship with another did ...

Re: How do I find the Reader Level scores for other books?

I had not seen the scholastic site but have always used this one http://www.lexile.com/EntrancePageHtml.aspx?1 and now apparently you can search on Barnes & Noble using the lexile scale. Thanks for the new option - always looking for new books on the right level for my challenging to teach reading s...

Re: Which program are you using this year and when do you start?

Mary, remember me? I'm the short one.... hahaha I hear you on pulling out that guidebook and remembering the good thoughts. I've spent the whole past year remembering the awesome year I had with my ds when he was working through 2nd grade doing Beyond (little brother was kind enough to help in all o...

Re: Determining reading difficulties

I'm so glad that Julie mentioned and encouraged the use of the audio book - this is what really helped my dd pick up speed and interest in her reading and I'm slowly seeing results in her younger brother who is almost 10. He has been a very challenging child when it comes to reading but we are makin...

Re: OT - We made it South Korea safely!

Awesome! I live there as a child (my Dad was with the State Department) back in 1972 through 1976. It was some of the best years of my young life. I know a lot has changed as I've read from others that have traveled there in more recent years - back then you could only have a car in black and my par...
