Re: Anyone combining younger ones in CTC or RTR?

I am doing RTR with a high schooler - if you did all the history reading one day a week that would be A LOT of reading! especially when there are written narration assignments to be done after the readings. I am actually doing all the history reading with my dd (along with the Shakespeare) and it is...

Re: At my wit's end with ds9...again.

As a mom with 3 boys (and 1 girl), I totally understand and have been in your shoes. I have one ds who is now 11 and has does many things like your son and so many times when I tell my dh about it or call for help, well, my little man just seems to settle himself right down. I know our gut reaction ...

Re: Possibly Beefing up Bigger....

Since Bigger's focus is more on the key people - their biographies, so to speak, you might take your reading focus in that direction? Also, I purchased (since my high schooler is doing American History and one ds is doing Bigger) the Drive Thru History DVDs (there are 4 of them) that cover the key p...

Re: Science in RTR.....

Lynn - no need to worry about acknowledging me - you've got a lot on your plate and I just wanted to offer up a few suggestions - especially since RTR is the new program this year so those of us using it are learning new things, too this year. I have a feeling that your last post was a peek into a m...

Re: Science in RTR.....

I, unfortunately, don't have a lot of great ideas with regards to fixing the science. My dd is loving it but she hasn't read this book before. Actually, she hasn't said she is loving it but I'm finding her talking a lot about what she is reading so I think she likes it. I will say, first, we are jus...

Re: How to help a poor reader?

I have an 11 year old that has struggled to learn to read but finally, finally, he is making the progress in faster increments than over the past years while learning to read. He has handwriting issues, too, but those are much easier to accommodate but reading is a much bigger challenge. I've used t...

Re: DD doing CTC struggling reader

As a fellow mom of a struggling/not independent reader who is 11 today! I have no expert advice on this one. My ds placed better into Bigger rather than Preparing this year so we'll do Bigger - I may or may not add in extensions. My goal this year is to continue on developing his reading and writing...

Re: Looking at new RTR.....

I don't think you can make a mistake using HOD (just my personal opinion 8) no matter where you start. As for high school, some states have requirements so that would be the first place to start before making a final decision. Secondly, you would want to look at any possible college requirements if ...

Re: Could you use Bigger like this?

His writing ability places him within the Bigger range - I can't really tweak, stretch or mold him into Preparing. If I do, I fear we'll lose the ground we made this year. I have Beyond on my shelf as we did it 2 years ago and I so wanted to use it with my 2nd grader this year. I think he'd love it ...

Could you use Bigger like this?

I borrowed a copy of the Bigger manual from a friend to look at the total scope and sadly, we've covered most of the topics last year in a different program, so my plans for Bigger this year are squashed. I could do Preparing but he is not ready skill-wise for what is involved in Preparing - his wri...

Book Reading Level Determiner

Okay, trying to come up with a book list for my ds (the late bloomer reader) and we've worked through all of the SL 2 Intermediates this year and I liked how they gradually got more challenging - he needed lots of opportunity for reading without causing too much stress. Soooooo now I'm looking at DI...

Re: Bigger and Preparing Veterans Input Needed

Thanks so much for the heads-up on the R&S placement. That was definitely something I wasn't entirely sure about and it is good to know that he'd be better off moving forward. I went to a conference yesterday and looked over the R&S books for just a minute but only at the Grade 2 books since that wa...

Re: Bigger and Preparing Veterans Input Needed

Thank you so much Julie for the comparison on the writing assignments between Bigger and Preparing - that is exactly the insight I needed to make an educated decision (rather than a "but I want to do this because of me" decision). He is not ready for all of the writing - not that you had to do all o...

Bigger and Preparing Veterans Input Needed

I've actually written this post twice before but changed my mind but I'm going to push that submit button this time or ELSE! I need some advice on whether to use Bigger or Preparing for a 5th grader ---- background: My ds is a delayed reader and this year, in 4th, is finally reading almost independe...
