Re: When to start your school year when doin a 4 day school

I've done the younger guides over 4 days, which just means I pick up on the next day the next week. ;) This makes the younger guides go a little bit past a "school year," but I school year round and it's never been an issue to me. If I didn't do year round, I think I would just pick up the guide the...

Re: Algebra in 8th or 9th grade

I have a kiddo in 6th this fall who is in pre-algebra this year with Life of Fred and will likely also start Algebra 1 this year in 6th. We'll just see how it goes. I may look into some of the ones that HOD recommends too. So anyway, just chiming in because I understand and we are in the same positi...

Re: foreign language

We do Song School Latin 1 and 2 with my younger kids because you can make the lessons extremely short. We've enjoyed it. I don't use the DVD or the TM, just the student book with CD, and we only do a tiny bit each day--maybe 10 minutes? I got the flashcards and we do game with those, and we've watch...

Re: Little Hearts for His Glory for K, plus Genral ?

We've done LHFHG for K 3 times and it's always worked out well for us! I'm using LHTH for 4 yo prek right now. But I completely understand wanting to wait. If you decided to add the K workbooks to LHTH like others have suggested, I think you would be just fine.

Re: LHTH for Sunday School?

Thanks, Mommamo! So, did you do all the alphabet and math stuff too? I was thinking I might just do the things that were directly related to the Bible story itself, but maybe that wouldn't take up enough time? Did you read more than one Bible story at once, or just pick two from the week to focus o...

Re: Math question?

I move my fingers a lot too, but don't actually use them! How funny that others are the exact same way. I have always let my kids if they needed them. I think it helps to cement that picture in their minds, and eventually they don't need it anymore.

Re: LHTH for Sunday School?

I did it for Sunday School years ago and it was just so much fun!! I did each "week" of LHTH over 2 class times. We obviously did not get to every activity, but with about 45 minutes for each class, we got through a lot. I added some songs I thought they'd like that fit with the theme of the lessons...

Re: favorite programs for languages

We've done Song School Latin both 1 and 2 and Latina Christiana 1. We've also done Song School Spanish and Rosetta Stone Spanish. We've really liked all of these.

Re: What exactly is half speed??

Here is my thought on half speed, and you can take it our leave it. I've tried half speed several times, and after a while it just makes the guide feel long. I think that's one of the (myriad of) reasons we ended up taking our break from HOD. BUT! I have also done the 5 days/week guides over 4 days/...

That's how we've felt going back. My boy is about the same age as yours, I think. This is the happiest he's been with school for a while.

Re: Back to HOD

Momof3kids, I'm so glad my post was helpful! That's one of the reasons I went ahead and posted. I want people to be able to learn from my mistakes. I tried so hard for my middle to to be combined, and I wanted it so badly since they are such buddies, and it just wasn't right. Now they are sti...

Back to HOD

We have come back to HOD as it looks like several other people have! And now I am wondering why in the world we ever left it?! At the time I just, I don't know, thought it would be better to go it on my own. We were so busy at the time--I thought I was simplifying.  That was, oh, about 7...

We're coming back too after about a year's break! We're using Beyond and finishing where we left off in Preparing so we can start CTC some time this spring.

Re: Should I UNcombined?

I know you've already resolved things, but I have a new 7 yo with an almost 5 yo in LHFHG right now. They love it! It is so much fun watching them work together. This is our 2nd time through LHFHG. The first time through, my oldest was on the way younger end of the guide, and has been throughout eac...

Re: Reading struggles...advice needed

I was right there with you with my oldest, and am there right now with my current just turned 7 yo. With my oldest, what worked was time. Yup. Just time. I had to just work with her slowly until she was ready. I kept our reading lessons positive and brief, read great children's literature with her, ...
