Re: Question about extensions
Thanks for talking it out with me! That really helps me a lot. My boy is 9 1/2 and will be 10 right after Christmas, so will be 10 for a good portion of the school year. I think he would like having it for his special time with me. And yes, my 7 yo would probably want to listen too, but she'll have ...

Re: Science notebooking in CTC
I'm planning to use the page protectors in the CTC notebook (we're starting Monday) just because I like how it looks. I use page protectors for all their work, LHTH and on. If it's an art project or whatever, I'll even cut the construction paper down to printer paper size before they start so it wil...

Re: Question about extensions
Yeah, the boy in question will be in Bigger. My oldest (11) will be doing CTC, but she's pretty independent at this point, and she will definitely be doing the extensions. She can handle it, no problem. I'm truly not super worried about her school at all. Or about the youngest doing LHTH (we're abou...

Re: Question about extensions
He'll be doing his reading classes at the Scottish Rite. From my understanding, they really don't want me to do any teaching beyond what they will be doing with him. So at home we'll be doing math, history, science, but anything reading-related like spelling, reading, and handwriting will be done at...

Question about extensions
I got to thinking about something after reading the thread on extensions for Preparing. I have a son who would be more in the extensions range for Bigger (which we're starting this coming week, actually--I'm super excited as it will be our 2nd pass through Bigger). He'll be in 4th, but he's not a st...

Re: Advice on schooling with my toddler...
Yes, definitely what was said above about naptimes and schooling while the toddler is eating. Something else I did was to stick my toddlers in the high chair with different activities than the normally got to play with, like "finger painting" with pudding (for my kids with no allergies), books, cray...

Re: 5th grader and 7th grader in CTC?
We've been using DITHOR for several years now and I love it. I feel like my oldest (the only one who has used it so far) has learned so much from it. I think it really helps in thinking and really understanding literature without being overly heavy-handed on analysis.

Re: Just can't wait to order!
I understand about being excited about ordering. We took a couple years off of HOD and I realized I seriously missed it, so we're now back. I had everything I needed for Bigger already and got CTC from a friend, so all I had left to by were the notebooking pages which I bought tonight! So that was s...

Re: Can my children choose their books for DITHOR?
The suggested book list is great! We bought it when we first got DITHOR and it's what we typically use. This year we're trying an actual book pack though just for something different.

Re: Hearts For Him Through Time
We're doing CTC with extensions with my 12 yo 6th grader this year too. We're going to do at 5 days/week. I'm thinking that this should allow us to get through all 4 in about 3, 3.5 years. We also want to get to WG by 9th grade. I'm not wanting to push her of course, but I think she'll be fully capa...

Re: My kids HATE Robert Frost, and he's my FAVORITE!
I didn't like poetry either as a child, and while it's not something I read for fun now as an adult, I do have an appreciation for it now. Because I wanted my kids to grow up liking poetry, I did nursery rhymes with them a lot as babies and toddlers, moving into an anthology of poetry for children g...

Re: A 2nd grader in Bigger?
Not sure if I mentioned, but my kids who will be doing Bigger are going to go over 4 days. This will stretch it a little over a school year, and it will give your kiddo a little more time to grow.

Re: Help with math placement please!!
We have been using Life of Fred for a while and really like it. We've used it along with Singapore, and are currently using it alone for Pre-Algebra before moving into algebra. I really like Life of Fred, and I think it complements Singapore well because it shows kids how useful math is in real life.

Re: Organization and getting started
One thing I really like doing with both of those is getting a bigger binder than recommended, like a 2" I think, and organizing the year by unit. So instead of doing separate sections for science or history, I keep it all together by unit, and I print up a page with the unit number and topic at the ...

Re: A 2nd grader in Bigger?
I've also had my 2 girls (who are old enough to be there LOL) in the younger end of the guides, my son in the upper end of the age range. (We did take off a couple years from HOD--not because it was too hard or anything but I just decided we need to--still not sure why lol--so my oldest is just now ...
