Re: Reading Level Question

Jennifer, I found that if you go to HOD home page and then go to "book shop" there is a list of the level 2 and level 3 books and they have the reading levels listed on them. It appears that level 2 is reading level 3.0 to 4.1. I discovered this when I was trying to figure out the same thing for my ...

Re: A question about the Preparing packages....

Thank you for these posts, this is helping me even though we won't be starting preparing for a while, my son will be almost 11 when he starts. I was trying to figure out about the #8 and #9 books as well. There are books in both of these options that I'd like to use... does anyone ever switch back a...

summer school

Every year I have intentions to school throughout the summer and then we don't do as much as I'd like. We have a good problem of having lots of neighbor kids to play with and in addition to that we take care of a friend's child all summer. I would still like to continue at least some school during t...

Re: Talk me into using DITHOR!

We have just recently started with DITHOR and we really are enjoying it. My 8 and 9 year olds both have to read out loud to me, but I only have them each read for about 5 minutes (they have gained a new appreciation for my reading out loud skills :) and now understand better when I say, "no more cha...

Re: Question about Hide 'Em in Your Heart Volume II

We have the DVD which doesn't have all the songs on it... so we only use it for the songs we have. I just couldn't justify buying the whole CD when we had some of them already but I would love to have all of them. My kids love these and it has helped me to memorize the scripture as well! There have ...

Re: Has anyone spiral bound their manual?

When I received the first manual I thought to myself "this is never going to last....I bet pages will be falling out soon and I'll have to get it spiralled (is that a word? :D ). But it has withstood all manner of rough treatment, I'm very impressed and glad to know it will still be in one piece for...

Re: DITHOR DD wants to read ahead of schedule?

WOW. I too, am wondering about this. I was considering posting something similar so I was glad to read this. Today is the first day we have actually done a DITHOR "worksheet" with my 9 year old son, He is never happy about having to stop reading a book, but I have been making him follow his reading ...

Re: Can you help me figure out if 6yr old is behind?

Hi, When my ds (who is now 9) was that age I was quite concerned. We would read "cat" in the BOB books and by the time he got to the next page he had forgotten all of the sounds AND for some reason couldn't understand that "cat" on one page is the same as "cat" on the next page. I was comparing him ...

Re: Bigger's science

Julie, Thanks. I think those are good ideas, and I don't think we would've had this problem except the first two OSS books we did were very hands on so that was their expectation with this one as well and I didn't do a good job in changing their expectations--before finding HOD a lot of our habitat ...

Re: Bigger's science

My children and I have read and "done" parts of the one small square backyard book and the pond book (I think that's what its called!) and they LOVED them. The pictures are great and they really kept my kids' attention and helped them to identify different things. Last year we started Bigger (after ...

Re: Using a Globe and What Kind

We've had an inflatable globe (kids played with it instead of using it as a globe) and a wall map --which I liked a lot but everytime we wanted to look at something we 'd all have to get up and go over to the wall. I finally found a very nice globe on a stand at a thrift store and bought it and we l...

Re: Beyond for a 4th grader

I can't really speak to your situation but I'll tell you ours :D I started my 7 and 8 year olds out with Bigger last year and after 2 1/2 to 3 months we switched to Beyond. All of the handwriting was the big issue for both of mine! I think that the history reading in Bigger is significantly more dif...

Re: Looking for great books for my 2yo.

I certainly wouldn't call these books "inspiring" but my little one LOVES them, the "how do dinosaurs say good night... eat their food... clean their room... etc.. "series by Jane Yolen.

Re: organizing and planning ahead DITHOR books

We have six 6ft. high bookcases filled with children's books and even with all that selection both of my older children will pick out eiher a DITHOR book or a "curriculum" book to read for fun--and then I have to quickly take it away from them :D . That certainly proves to me and them that Carrie ha...

Re: Sad news

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have lost two sweet babies. It was devastating to realize that all the hopes and dreams I had for them would never come to pass. It is truly heartbreaking. God is the healer of our hearts and I know He will comfort you during this hard time. Now may the God of h...
