Re: Confused by HOD phonics & need reading help

We did The Reading Lesson with our three middle boys. For natural readers, its just fine. But, for my struggling readers, I really, really like All About Reading. Its so much more than just a phonics program. It helps with fluency, speed, high-frequency words, and literature analysis. Its so, so awe...

Re: Advice on No-Nonsense Algebra

We also tried it and didn't like it. We've had serious issues with algebra, and I don't think it's just my son. We jumped around a bit, trying to find something that worked. I really hoped No-No sense would work, but it didn't. Fun something solid and consistent, like Abeka or Saxon or another text ...

Re: Need HS Portfolio Building Advice From Experienced Moms

Wow, I hadn't thought about creating a portfolio. We are in GA too, but I hadn't really seen that requirement, of course we are looking at small, local colleges or online. I'd start with a books read list and samples of writing. If you use HOD, then you could add the notebook pages. I have my oldest...

Re: Grading New American History Guide

We just finished the WH guide, and we did it in installments. We didn't have the grading helps that we had with the WG guide, but it really did work out just fine. I looked at the WG guide to understand Carrie's thoughts with grading, and just applied the principles to the new guide. Science and mat...

Re: Considering, questions

Yes, I should have clarified. I don't mind running several of the older guides, as they are mainly independent. However, running several of the younger guides doesn't work for our family AT THIS TIME. This year, we will have 3 in CTC, 1 who listens in on CTC but does her own math and LA, and 3 who w...

Re: Considering, questions

Hi there. I'm sure you will find the help you need. :) I have 8 too, and combining works well for me for right now. It will not always work well, I perceive, but I'm struggling with making the transistion. Check out the placement guide for each child. THat's the first step. Report back, and maybe we...

Thankful for HOD

Carrie, Mike, Julie and everyone else at HOD, I just wanted to say thank you for the work that you do with this curriculum. We have eight children, and there is a 6 year gap between the oldest and the second. Just as my oldest was really needing a beefy education, the babies kept coming, and I felt ...

Re: How to scale back....or going at a slower pace

With kids needing remedial work, focus on that. The other stuff is so much less important. Do RTR at half-pace, but do the remedial work daily. I agree about housework, it just may need to be done at other times. You can still do a quick 30-45 minute cleanup before daddy gets home, but teaching the ...

Re: Geometry: A Guided Inquiry

I ha enthused the text, and don't plan on it. We use Ssxon. For math, I'm not overly fond of TT, but I really woul advise to not switch up at this point. I think math needs continuity, and switching from curriculum to curriculum can leave holes. While it can help when someone is really struggling, I...

Re: Suggestions for "beefing up" LHFHG

For the first year of homeschooling, especially after the child has been to PS, it is best to keep things as simple as possible. I would suggest do LHFHG as written for the first 9-12 weeks. At that point, if its not enough or she's grown in her skills and needs more, you can add some then. Even if ...

Re: High School Guides - for Average Students?

My oldest has used HOD since 4th grade, he is now finishing up the WH guide. He is absolutely average. He has excelled in history because of HOD. He is average or below in math, and doesn't score well on tests. However, his history and literature knowledge and experience is vast. Quite much more tha...

The only one we've tried, so far, is Visual Latin. My 16yo loves it. The teacher is very funny, and he makes a lot of sense.

Re: Spiral binding the student notebooks

I wish I loved 3-ring notebooks, because they are the most logical, useful system. I must be weird. I have considered spiral binding at home, and I really should get a machine since I do it so much.

Spiral binding the student notebooks

Has anyone done this? I absolutely loathe 3-ring binders. They take up too much space, and aren't comfortable to use. I love spiral bound, and was wondering if anyone has bound a student's notebook (the ones that begin in CTC.)

Re: Large family moms - combining question

Julie, can you post or send me a copy of your schedule? I don't believe there is any way that I could run that many guides, especially with three preschoolers/ toddlers running around. Every minute that I'm occupied with a big kid is a minute that they need to be supervised. I am not highly structur...
