Re: Handwriting-proper grip

My 3rd grade ds has always crossed over his thumb when writing. He used the "crossover grip" on his pencils for about 1 1/2 years (we also tried the "claw" grip for a while, but he didn't like that one). His handwriting was not improving, and anytime he used a pencil without the grip he would go bac...

Re: Should I go ahead and put dd in Preparing???

I just had a conference with my oldest two. As expected, my dd is so excited about the possibility of going ahead and doing Preparing. She enjoys the stories in Beyond, but she says it's too easy. (If she wants to, she can always read the Beyond books for fun in her spare time, and I suspect she wil...

Re: Should I go ahead and put dd in Preparing???

As far as your son goes, where do you think he places on the placement chart? Does he fit in more boxes on the placement chart for Beyond or Preparing? I am not sure he would be if he would be ready for Preparing, although he may be? You said: But if I ask him to write down something he has learned...

Re: Should I go ahead and put dd in Preparing???

My 1st grader does let his older siblings answer most of the questions for him, so I do think he could benefit from them splitting up. My 4th grade dd places in Preparing without a doubt. My 3rd grader is the question. I was leaning towards keeping him with the 1st grader in Beyond, because my 3rd g...

Should I go ahead and put dd in Preparing???

Although we've been very happy with our 3 oldest combined in Beyond this year, I can't help but think about the future, wondering when I'd split them up. At some point it would have to be done. If I wait until dd is in 9th grade, she'd miss out on quite a bit during middle school (like RevToRev and ...

Re: Child's Story of America concerns

Thanks for the responses. I will go ahead and use the book as scheduled in the extensions, but I'll make sure the book isn't kept on the "free to read anytime" bookcase.

Yes, I meant A Child's Story of America. Obviously my brain isn't working correctly today. I will edit my original post!

Child's Story of America concerns

Hi everyone! We are in Unit 11 of Beyond, and really enjoying it. I'm already starting to look ahead to next year (for budgeting purposes). My oldest 3 children will be in Bigger, with the oldest 2 using extensions. I was reading reviews of A Child's Story of America at Amazon, and some serious conc...

An update on how our year is going with 3 dc in Beyond

I just wanted to give an update on our year so far, since I asked for a lot of advice before we got started. Well, combining my three oldest in Beyond is going SO WELL. We are in Unit 6 and have a great routine going. First, I do LHTH with the 4yo and 2yo. During that time, my oldest three are eithe...

Re: Please ease my mind about my 8.5 yr.old doing Beyond!

I have 3 children in Beyond right now- my 6yo (will be 7 in Dec), my just-turned 8yo, and my 9.5yo. They are all enjoying it very much. We are looking forward to moving through the guides with these 3 combined, using extensions for the 2 oldest starting with Bigger.

Re: Beyond & littles - which side first?

I've found that for us, it works better to do the left side and storytime of Beyond first (after I've finished LHTH with the 2yo and 4yo). It's easier to get everyone together that way. Then they move on to their 3R's subjects; I work one-on-one with my 1st grader, while my 3rd and 4th graders work ...

Re: OT - do you MAKE your children tithe?

My children are younger than yours, but yes, we do have them tithe. I think "make" is a strong word; we direct them. They all have a piggy bank where they put money they receive (for birthdays, coins they find on the ground, etc). Once every several months we count up the money in the piggy banks, a...
