Re: Intro and Question

I planned to do Ancient and wrote out 36 weeks worth using MOH vol. 1 as my spine and lots of good living books to back it up. Would you dump it for CTC? I am having a hard time deciding. On one hand it seems a waste to throw away many hours worth of plans, but I do already own a lot of the books r...

Re: Hints on Child Training~H. Clay Trumbull

I have it and really enjoyed reading it! It's the kind of book to just read a chapter at a time and give it some time to think about. (unlike what I usually do, which is speed-read or skip around to the parts of a book I'm interested in! ) Definately worth reading! :)

Re: CTC notebook question

I can't see myself remembering to add the pages each week You are right! I would not remember either! My daughter was rough on her pages too and they came out. Now I have them in page protectors where she can pull it out, complete it and then slide it back in. What a great idea! I have used the rei...

CTC notebook question

Julie or others who are using CTC, did you start with all the pages in the notebook or add them as you went along? A few of our pages have come out (due to heavy use I suppose :D - the pages are thick and of great quality ) and I was wondering if maybe next year for RTR I should just add them in as ...

Re: The reasons behind HoD's choices

Wow! We are just finishing CTC and I did not realize that we will add a new section to the student notebook each year(through each guide) until there is one large volume completed over 4 years. How exciting! :D

Re: comparing maths

We use TT also and love it! My daughter really benefits from the visual aspect and the constant review. (Each day the problems include both concepts from the current lesson and review from previous lessons.) We switched from MUS and it is just a better fit for her. HTH! :)

Re: CTC Science with RTR

In CTC, the science ties in with the history in that you are studying a subject that correlates to the history period. However, there are no history/science lessons that relate to each other or refer to each other specifically. So, I suppose it could be done if you really needed to.

Re: RTR for all my children?

Since I don't have RTR yet, I can't speak specifically about it, but we are doing CTC right now and I think it is possible to do with a 9 year old, especially a quick learner. Mostly I think you would have to adjust by being involved more. For example, reading the history out loud with her, listenin...

Re: Questions about the programs for my children

Yes, many ladies do a guide "half-speed", finishing it in 2 years instead of one. You can do the "left side" of the guide one day and the "right side" the next, or whatever works for you.

Re: Questions about the programs for my children

Lisa, welcome to HOD! :D I'm sure you'll get some great advice from the ladies here. We used My Father's World previously, and while we enjoyed it in many ways, HOD has just been perfect for us. I like having all the planning done for me- Carrie plans it all out in such a way that all the pieces coo...

Re: What do you like about Singapore Math?

Thanks, Kathleen :D .... not sure how that happened! Thanks to everyone for their responses. It gives me some good things to think about. I think dd was placed well, but Carrie's hands-on activities were probably the missing piece for us. Thanks again!

Re: Considering HOD for K and 1st

What a great comparison Julie did! We used MFW before coming to HOD. While I think MFW is a very good curriculum, HOD has just been a much better fit for us, for many of the reasons Julie cited. I just wanted to add that I have found the hands-on activities to be much more "do-able" with HOD. I alwa...

What do you like about Singapore Math?

For those of you using Singapore math with HOD's scheduled hands-on lessons, what do you like about it? We started 1st grade with it, but after doing Abeka, dd was NOT liking math anymore (she loves Abeka's cute, colorful worksheets). Since math had been her favorite subject, we went back to Abeka. ...

Re: CTC (supplies for the year)

No copying the memory verse onto index cards, but you will need index cards for other things (like copying the poem to glue onto the artwork for poetry).
