Re: Preparing for an advanced reader but slow writer?

I agree with what everyone has already stated here. You do not want to jump ahead if the writing is not there. My ds is an advanced reader (high school/college level) and Bigger has been very enjoyable for him. He has read the extensions for fun and I even threw in a few other American History novel...

Re: Handwriting-Need Help

Have you tried writing the poem, one line at a time, on grade 1 lined paper, right above where he writes? I wonder if you even just started with one line, and it was right above, if he would have an easier time remembering how to form the letters???? Or if he is really having trouble with a lot of ...

Re: Nature Study & music question

As mentioned already, the composer and artist studies are in later guides. I believe a nature journal is scheduled in a later guide as well. We are halfway through Bigger and have spent a bit of time on birds, leaves, flowers, trees and such. DC frequently draw pictures from their books as part of s...

Does anyone use ESV with HOD?

How does it work out with the guides for bible memory and discussion questions? We have always been NIV users but are looking at switching to ESV as a family.

Re: My son has autism....

My oldest ds has Asperger's and HOD works very well for him. We started with LHFHG and are now in Bigger. When ds was younger, I used a picture schedule for the day's activities as well as for the order of the HOD boxes. Now that he is older, we just look at the guide together. The layout of the box...

We haven't needed anything so far beyond a ruler, yardstick and meter stick. We are about 1/3 of the way through 3b

Re: Are we ready for Preparing??

Your comment about worrying about your son missing out and always being behind reminded me of a very encouraging post Carrie (the author) made on a thread once when a Mom asked about it being OK if her child did not complete all the guides. I copied her post below since I am having trouble posting a...

Re: Are we ready for Preparing??

Have you checked the placement chart to see where each of your children place individually? Even if you are planning to combine, it is still good to know where they place in the guides skillwise. Based on what you have shared so far, I would not start any higher than Bigger for combining. You can ea...

Re: Help with placement, please?!

One thing that may help you as you start out with three guides is to stagger start each guide. If you focus on your oldest first and get him going with his guide, then a few days/weeks later you can focus on your daughter and get her going with her guide. When you are ready to start with your younge...

Re: Left-brained child?

If the read alouds really seem over her head, it is probably wise to switch to Beyond since she is new to HOD. Her listening and narration skills will improve with practice and time, but Beyond will approach those skills in a slightly more gentle manner as age appropriate. The spelling list 2 and ER...

Re: Bigger Storytime and DITHOR

The DITHOR book packs are coordinated by reading level as well as for the genres. The storytime packs are for the parent to read and therefore contain a broader range of reading levels. While some of the books might be appropriate, you would need to look up each book's reading level to see if it is ...

Re: Emerging Readers and Child Expectations

Those type of mistakes were totally normal for my oldest 2 when they each transistioned to the Emerging Readers. I think I remember Julie stating in a thread once that it is ok if children need help with 2-3 words per page as they move into the ER's. Over time that number should decrease as their fl...

Re: Drawn into the Heart of Reading

There is not a list of books in the teacher's guide. However, the sample book ideas list will be a helpful tool if you are utilizing the library. I refer to it whenever I need to replace a book in the book packs that ds or dd has already read.

Re: LHFHG Combined or Not?

If you do not have clear direction one way or the other, it is probably best to start with them combined and split them up later if it doesn't work out rather than the other way around as that might be hard on your oldest's self esteem. It is easy to beef up LHFHG with extra copy work and spelling/g...
